I refer to my previous post PostID: 25324 in which I described my experience with the Cobb Cooker I had purchased in June 2005, for my trip to Innamincka in July 2005. When I returned from the trip, I was generally unhappy with the quality of the base on the cooker even though it performed well in its role as a cooker.
After complaining to Cobb via their email, as provided in their brochure, and not receiving any reply I posted to the forum. This finally drew a response from Cobb and after some to-ing and fro-ing we resolved that the fault with communication had been due to IT issues at the company.
Once this communication issue and who was at fault was resolved I was offered a free replacement base in an effort to appease me. I did not accept this kind offer for 2 reasons.
1) It had been intimated that all I was after was a free replacement of a base that I was responsible for breaking. I admitted fault in the breakage because I hadn’t fully read the warning in the booklet and was merely trying to contact the company to see if I was covered by their warranty. This was where the communications problem came into play.
2) I considered that as the existing base as so flimsy and it would suffer the same fate as the original base, therefore the problem would not be solved and I would just eventually own 2 broken bases, no thanks….

Here we are nearly a year later….I went to the caravan and camping show at Rose Hill recently and wandered past the Cobb display. They have a new base available now, it belongs to the new model called the Premier. It is made from Stainless Mesh and spot-welded together, no plastic mounting points at areas of high stress. It fits the old Mk I model like mine.

So I emailed Brian Sinclair at Cobb when I got home and asked about the price and availability of the new base. He replied that yes they are available and the cost is $49 plus post. I ordered one immediately.

When it arrived I installed the cooker into it and knew I now had a tough piece of equipment that will not self-destruct on corrugated roads. It cooks as well as it did on the previous base. I thought that the mesh may not provide enough protection from breezes impacting on the heating section but it seemed to not be affected by it.

Overall I am a happy camper now that the Cobb has been toughened up and despite my previous disagreement with a certain Cobb staff member, I feel that Cobb are a reputable company to deal with who really do take steps to maintain customer satisfaction……I would like to think that my post and some of the replies may have had some influence in the design change.....hey I can dream can't I? :)))

I have no hesitation in recommending the Cobb Cooker with the new S/Steel base.

I don’t think I need to add that I have no affiliation with Cobb, I am just giving credit where it is due…..

Have I misunderstood your post? Or did it cost you another $49 to obtain, what you consider, an appropriate part for the job?

Yes Mike,
i broke the first base and had repaired it myself but it would not be going camping with me ever again as it was still too flimsy.

The new base is strong and i will now be able to take my $200 plus cooker camping again instead of it being a home-dwelling waste of money.

Agree with Mike here ........ The origional base was for better words poor quality ie plastic fittings and now they have fixed that part in the newer models and you had to pay $49.00.

Not sure what was in your letter after the show but I'm sure I would have pointed out the origional complaint and see where they went with that.

In the end If your a happy camper i guess.

Brian

I assume that the retail cost of the base is $49.00. I would expect Cobb to charge the cost price + postage for existing owners with a faulty (broken) base. I don't see this as asking for something for noth'n.
