Has anybody been into Cape Warender recently (or at any time). We are heading for the Mitchell Plateau in August and would like to head up to Warender. We will be towing camper trailers.

Any info or coments appreciated.

Cheers and happy 4wding.

Haven't been up that way, but the road to Mitchell Plateu is prety good as of 2 weeks ago. A few friends have been up to warrender and said the road was pretty bad - but they considered it worthwhile. I will be considering it next year, as I was both pretty impressed and a little dissapointed with Kalumburu this year. It was a great spot etc, but I like a little more seclusion and privacy if I go to the effort of nursing a vehicle and boat/trailer for 2 days to get there. (no offense to any fellow campers etc at Honneymoon).

Cheers Andrew

PS anyone going up to Kalumburu I would recommend doing a tour of the museum and church - I am neither religious or much of a history buff, but father Tom is very knowlegeable and has some good views on the affairs of the reigion and its history. Even for people going to the falls and not Kalumburu, its only 70 odd k's on a crap road to get there, and would be worth the diversion for a day IMO

Last time I was at port Warrender, about 4 years ago, the track after the Crystal Creek turn off was quite badly erroded by rain. There were some tight corners with up to 2 metres deep ruts each side of the wheel tracks. At that time it would have been pretty dodgy with a trailer Check with "Bluey Vaughan" at Broome. He has a fishing camp there and drives up to Port Warrender at the end of the wet season each year (08) 9193-5689

Last year I was advised by the guys at Drysdale not to attempt to take my 5m boat into Port Warrender as it would have been pretty hairy getting down and up. Port Warrender is exposed and a difficult place to launch and retrieve a boat bigger than a tinny. The tides are a lot bigger than around Kalumburu and if windy, there is not much protection. If going there to fish you must get your tides right, otherwise you will waste your time. If going to see the place, then take it easy and you will be able to say you have been to one of the remote parts of Australia. I have a 13m long rig which may have got stuck on a few bends with nowhere to go!

Ten years ago we visited port warender.

Midgie city, not much camping space, little fresh water, worst 4wd track I have driven on BUT the saving grace was we caught some fish.

I would not recommend taking a trailer, camper or boat.

Been there once, which was enough.

As mentioned before check with the guy that runs the fishing camp.

My experience was ten years ago!

Cheers

Sdr00y,

It wasn't that bad !! I was there with you !

For everybody else, I visited Port Warrender in 1994 & 1996.

Yes, a very rugged track in. From memory, the last 13 km's took about 2 1/2 - 3 hours to negotiate. However, I don't classify this as the "worst 4wd track". I see it as a very challenging 4x4 track, which many of us actually enjoy. A good test of vehicle and driver.

Unless things have changed in the past 10 years, the camping area is really only limited to 2 spots, which don't allow for too many visitors at one time. The fishing guides that visit there normally just park their vehicles up on the shore, and boat over to their camps on the other side of the inlet.

Fishing can be awesome. There are several islands a short trip away, as well as the Lawley River. Watch out for the tides though. On one of the trips, we rescued a group of travellers from Victoria who had flipped their small tinnie as they rounded one of the islands.

Definately one spot for the fishermen though. There's not much else to do in that particular area.

Enjoy

Scorcher
