Just been out in the back blocks and found that the car raido /cd player would'nt pickup stations when put on seach . Go through them manually and found at least 3 strong stations . I was wondering what peoples thought's were about a good car raido that will pickup stations in the outback . The Pioneer that i have at the moment is not good enough and i need to change it . Thanks in advance . Errol

gday Errol

I have a similar problem with my sony. Sometimes it works better with a few settings changed like the local/remote setting etc. I wish I still had the manual ! I used to have a eurovox which was geat - had a search function which you could hit and it would go through and find the 6 strongest stations and store them for you. I do miss that function, but the current sony will do me for now. Hope this helps a little. I kind of wish it would die so I could justify getting one with a USB port on the front

Cheers Andrew

Hi there Errol, I have pioneer in the old hilux, 6 stacker, amp, 6 speakers all the gear, $2500 worth and the standard hilux antenna, I find with mine unless the station comes through 100% on auto search it wont lock in and yet when I do manual search I come accross stations same thing you are saying,in saying this I also have on myn a button which switches between local or distance for tuning I find that it does work well as in city areas it will pick up everything available with a strong signal but when in country areas I push the button to distance and it will pick any station it can wether the signal is weak or strong in search mode and will lock in. I think it is just one of those features of this brand of radio. Pioneer have been around a long time and in my opinion they make a great stereo, I dont think there are much better brands, maybe alpine is better I dont know I'm not an expert in this field, I think you will just have to do manual search unless you have the mentioned button, or other wise buy a lot more cd's LOL.Maybe you need to find out some of the local stations that are on air or thou in remote places you will be lucky to get anything except a hissing noise, thats why I have the stacker. Regards Steve M

I agree with you Bruce, a good aerial would help there. There is alot of difference though in car radios, some get signals better than others. Mobile phones too, the Siemens I had was a shocker........

Hi Errol,

Never mind changing the head unit (stereo) i have done this to my FJ62 truck and i will never turn back..

Just go to your local (supercheap auto, autobarn, whatever) they sell FM Amplifiers i bought one and fitted it i think mine was about a 25W amp or something, just a small unit that should fit behind your dash just in with your head unit and OMGosh man, my antenna has actually snapped off now so i have no antenna yet i can drive to the middle of nowhere and have full strength radio signal, unit only cost about 50 so much less than getting a whole new unit and you will also notice that the quality it MUCH better :-)

Give it a go, nothing to lose and sooooo sooo SOOOO much to gain!

Justin

Hi Errol

Do you have a forge out the front?

We have a weekender out at Bruce Rock (for a year and a haft)

The other day traveling through York I noticed the anvil (not a forge) on the side of the road and thought to myself, was that you?

Nothing else

I have a clarion in the Statesman and it works fine. One night out near Warwick it auto tuned to three Melbourne stations ;-) OEM job in the Paj is also good. Not sure who makes that one.....

Seems the answer is to find a model that permits config of the search sensitivity - you get that in certain HF, UHF radios - my aftermarket Sanyo in the car does not have it - don't know if some do..... anyway, car radio manufacturers wouldn't care about a relative handful of people in Oz who like to drive outback - there's more $ in the cities - hell.... many of them wouldn't even rate Oz as a marketplace.

Gooday,
Have a Kenwood self seeking in our caravan, was a few months old when I went accross The Centre, Plenty, Great /Central to Laverton last July, has no manual tuning, only flexible antennae about 10" long on C/van, had good reception all night every night, but as soon as the sun came up the radio signal went to bed. Not so lucky during the day though.
Cheers,
Boroma 604.
