I suspect this is a bug with Firefox rather than the code for this
forum.
I'm currently running version 1.5.0.4 of Firefox (the latest) on a Windows 2000 platform and notice that when I open this
forum in a Firefox window Firefox grabs, and keeps, about 70% of CPU resources which causes the whole machine to slow down somewhat. When I kill the windows with
forum pages CPU usage returns to normal. I have not observed this issue on any other web pages. As a temporary fix I'm using IE for this
forum - yuk :)
This may only be a W2000 issue or it may only be my machine for reasons best known to itself but it's probably worth you other Firefox users hitting "Ctrl-Alt-Del" and selecting "Task Manager" then "Performance" to see what your CPU usage is.

I'm running XP pro and Firefox and there is very little impact on performance.

Thats interesting Mike, Im looking at my performance at the moment-7%, ohh hang on 8%.... I have found firefox to be brilliant, and like most that make the switch are happy (I could see this turning into another waeco Vs Engel thing LOL)
My CPU usage when using EO peaks around 27% when loading pages.
Hope you get it sorted

Problem is a known bug with Firefox's memory handling. Affects some, not others. Mines fine though I'm running on XP which is better with FF than 2k.
One way to reduce the effect is to add a new config preference called "config.trim_on_minimize" with a value of "true"
This forces Firefox to release memory and cpu resources when closing a window or tab. Won't do much to reduce the usage for an open window but at least you'll get it bake when you close the tab.
A way test to check you copy of FF is to go to portableapps.com and download a copy of Portable FireFox. Run that (it doesn't need to be installed, just unzip the package and run the exe) and see how it performs.

Thanks for that John.
Portable FF behaves in a similar manner but only grabs about 35% of CPU resources when this
forum is open. If I go "Back" and "Forward" between the
forum and
my home page (BOM text weather forecast) there is a noticeable change in CPU resources - 35% for the
forum, 1% for the BOM.
btw this does not appear to be a memory issue - memory usage barely changes irrespective of which page FF is displaying - it's purely CPU usage.

Try it on an XP box if you have one available. Currently
mine shows between 0-7% usage for FF with 8 tabs open.

Interesting.
The XP box shows similar results when I switch between the BOM text page and the
forum. However as the XP box is more than twice as fast as the W2000 (1GHz - 2.4GHz) the CPU usage on XP is around 20% to 30% on the
forum dropping to 1% on the BOM page.
Just to clarify; CPU usage on the
forum under IE is 1% or 2% so it is looking like a Firefox issue.
For the non techies: CPU usage will depend on which applications and background tasks your computer is running at any given time. If you want to measure
forum usage use the "Back" and "Forward" buttons in the browser to toggle between the
forum and a simple text only page such as:
Site Link
Once the page has fully loaded note the _difference_ between the average CPU usage on the text page and the average CPU usage on the
forum and that is, approximately, the percentage of CPU resources the
forum is using on your particular computer.

Mike,
What MrBitchi said
with the addition that if you minimise FF, it frees the resources (memory, cpu) which were hogging your machine.
BTW, I use 64 bit XP, and its a blast with Firefox (I have a deep seated hatred of IE) and am currently using 2 -10% of cpu, as I type this.

Terry

MrBitchi,
Where do you put the config preference that you described?
I am running FF 1.0.4 on Win 2000 also and the
forum pages all use up 100% of CPU power. I do not think that it used to be the case because I habitually have various browser windows open in the background and have not noticed it before.

Phil,
Open a new tab and type "about:config" in the address bar. The config settings will appear. Right click in the page and select "new > String" and follow the prompts.
One other thing, go to the extensions tool and download the "FasterFox" extension and install it. See if that makes a difference.

Hi Mr Bitchi
Put the string into config as you described and restarted FireFox. Unfortunately no change. The CPU use is low for about 2 seconds after the page has loaded and then jumps to 100%.
It does not matter if it is the main
forum page or just a single post.
Nothing else on the web that I have tried does this.
Really wierd.

Running the same ver of firefox as you but on an old PIII 933Mhz with 512 RAM.
After stopping MSN messenger and a few other tray items i was able to go from 66% down to 22-25%.

Xp Home running firefox, latest build. CPU usage 1%.
From "Processes" tab: tskmgr.exe 1%,System Idle Process 99%
You might have a bit of on-board spyware. Check your Network Utilization too.

The problem as I see it is not so much the CPU usage as the amount of RAM that is used.
With 6 tabs open together with OpenOffice, Thunderbird and PowerDesk I am using 50-550% CPU but only 20900K out of 261620K of physical memory. (an old machine with P2-800 and upgraded to 256M of RAM)

I asked David about this and he asked me to try
" target="EOF" class="lbg">www.exploroz.com/splash.asp?layout=5
and it fixes it!
layout=5 turns off the scrolling news in the box at the top left.
You can also launch the

I have been using Site Link to open the
forum each time. However often when I post a reply I later notice the “Latest News” panel scrolling. What is happening?
