I was making inquiries about prices for an oil filter for my 3ltr turbo hilux. I've always had a mechanic do oil changes thus far and don't know what they fit. The filter on it is grey so maybe a Ryco.
What bothers me is the spare parts man at the local Toyota told me to stay away from after market filters as the original has a mechanism/ valve to stop the oil flowing back into the motor after the engine is turned off. The filter is mounted downwards on the moter so oil can drain back. He told me this caused the motor top end to run without lubrication on start up, til the oil pumps through.
Is this accurate. Any comments please.
The original filter is twice the price, $51 dollars quoted.
The motor in my hilux is a 1KZ-TE.

I am sure Toyota filters are not the only ones with a Non-return valve in em. Have a hunt around.

Well I've been using $20 aftermarket oil filters on my 1KZ-TE since I've owned it (do all the changes myself) and I have never had a problem...

I wonder why the Hilux/Prado/Surf 1KZTE Toyota filter is so expensive, it's exactly the same as the 1HZ filter off the 80 series diesel.... In fact, that's all I ask for now days, it's just easier than getting the blank "you asked for a what now for a surf?" look from the 13 year old behind the counter. As soon as you mention 80 series they just hand it over.

Have a look on the Ryco web site and they state that their filters have anti drain back valves.

Have a look on Ebay ,type in landcruiser into the search ,is always an online 4x4 store selling oil/air /fuel filter kits for round the $50 mark , have been getting mine from a "store" in W.A. delivered to Brisbane for $48 for all 3 filters ,at that price is cheap to change all 3 every 5,000k.

Yep your correct, I just rang toyota where my friend works and yep $38 trade $49 over the counter price. What a rip off, thats cause they are late model, she gets my oil filters for my old hilux 2.8D and cost me $11 thats cost price, all the older parts are cheaper cause people go after market alot of the times once there out of warranty so they need to drop the price so they can still sell some. Same as my roof racks, genuine toyota (thule is the brand) german brand, I think thats how its spelt $180 genuine, for your model nearly five hundred bucks and made by the same manufacturer. Do your checking around as mentioned above maybe ryco do have the anti drain back vavle, also be careful if you are still covered by warranty as Toyota will not accept any warranty claims if you are running non genuine parts especially if its do with the motor, eg you have an engine prob non genine filter, hub problem ,are your running non genine wheels etc. Toyota are normally pretty good with warranty but will say no if as said above you are running non genuine parts. RRP for a 90915-30002 oil filter, which the 1kz-te uses is $37.50 +gst.
We sell boxes of 10 for $250 + gst.

Buying a box of 10 Toyota filters like Chris says above, is the easiest way to get the best filter at a reasonable price. Works out that you get a genuine filter for the same price as a Ryco Z334. I paid $275 for the last 10 I bought.

I've cut apart a couple and the Toyota genuine filters look the goods. These filters are 2-stage, and the second stage on the Toyota looks finer to me.

I've also been caught on other filters with the anti-drain back valve not working particularly well.

Cheers
