Hayman Reece are a crock,

my dad has an 80 series cruza with hayman reece tow bar hitch,

his car broke down the tow truck hooked onto the tow bar and it snapped straight off, the steel had crystalised... BEWARE!!!

That isn't the fault of the towbar mate, it's the fault of the tow truck driver for not using the axle of the car which is what you are supposed to winch a car onto a tow truck with.

WDH is not the same thing as the tow bar.

len , what model/weight? is the setup please.
Reason is i have the opportunity to buy one second hand (never used) and before I look at it I want to make sure it will suit my rig.
Unit i think he said was 500 lbs.

Give Hayman Reese a call, or send them an email. As the manufaturer they tend to be more of a subject matter expert. You'll need to know your van's GVM and/or towball weight.

I am towing a 18 ft full van with Hayman Reese Bar and Hitch it is a 550KG but all depends on your Ball Weight.Sounds like you need the same.

It is a good idea to fit WDH. You will have around 200kg pushing down on the ball. This will take off some where in the vicinity of 100kg from your front wheels (in addition to what you remove by loading behind the rear wheels.). This will take a lot away from your braking (80% of which comes from your front wheels) and steering. The WDH restores that weight and so increases the stability of your rig.

If you would like to know more about caravan stability and what hooking a van onto the back can do read, http://tinyurl.com/2zjhg
It was written by an engineer

Thanks PeterD and others who replied.

It certainly looks like the WDH is the way to go.

I have been towing a 18' caravan with an 80 series for the past eight years. I do not have a HR hitch just a Toyota tow bar fitted with a mini hitch. Works fine. 80 series are heavy enough not to have all that gismo stuff

Thanks Ray.

I have been using dual swaybars and have had no problems either.

My main concern is the legality of this on any insurance claim.
