On the rare occaisions when there is something good on TV while you are away doing the real stuff, you might wish you could record it.
1) Video used to be OK - but the playback quality sucks compared to that of the digital set top box's output (which you obviously miss because you aren't there).
2) DVD recorders generally were, and still are, expensive.
No more! My wife Jenny came back from Woolies yesterday evening - with a brand-spanking KROSS 80Gb HDD/DVD recorder for $269.00!! Works a treat. Chinese, I know - but at least the manual is written for the Aussie market and doesn't suffer from the "Chinglish" syndrome. Very good value, and easy to use. Writes to all common blank DVD types including re-writables.
Now when we're away I can record 4WD TV and other progies in digital format without having to spend $450+, which is what stopped me before.
Now.... back to normal programming.......

Your home too Al? LOL Need an organiser for remotes? How many powerboards for your plugs? May be a bit like a daisy chain soon.

John,
Yeah, starting to feel like a hotel doorman wishing all these lucky buggers the best for their trips hahahaha
Bloody remotes and powerboards lol I'm probably a fire
hazard in the making :))) Got one of those el cheapo combination remotes from Aldi months back. It does the basics for the TV/VCR/DVD/CD with options for another four power sucking toys hahahahahaha but have'nt been bothered with the more complex operations yet.

Hey Chris what warranty are Woolles offering on that machine.
4WD TV, what channel do you get that on. We have it on ch 31 a community channel which doesn't broadcast digital. never seen it in the list anyway.
I put a digital box on the kids TV sometime ago, turned a pretty ordinary picture into a picture postcard.

12 months Ray..... not bad for a cheapie. It has an analogue TV tuner built in, which found ch31 pretty easily. I use the built-in tuner to record from anyway - not my digital STB. The analogue TV signal compresses better than digital (at 7mbps) would, so you get far more onto HDD or DVD. I also use the built-in tuner to record on timer, as it can change channels for itself - which it can't get an external STB to.

G'day Omaroo, sounds like just what we need, but I have a question?.
Are you recording programs from an analogue TV through a digital top box to the new DVD recorder and if so how does it select different channels when you program record, as the recorder can not change the channel selected on the top box?
Hope we've put that right!

hehe.. that's cool Andy :)
Yup - If we're physically there, or I only want to record one program at a known time, then I set it to record from the input channel I have the STB connected to. Firstly I set the STB to the digital channel I want. I then set the HDD recorder's timer function to record from that input channel (the one I connected the STB to) at the nominated time - and I get to record a digital program. Works as long as you don't want to record from more than one TV channel. This way you can set it to record from that one channel as many times during a week as you like - to record the news for instance.
Cheers
Chris

At that price you could almost contemplate taking the thing with you when
camping - fully loaded HDD of "worthwhile" TV, small flat screen and a genie. It would be like having your loungeroom at your favourite place on earth. Probabbly need 2 on that basis.
Kind regards

Hi, I have had a digital hard disk recorder for several years now. Only cost about $150 back then. It is called a digital tuner card for PC. It has 500 Gb (five hundered gigabytes) space from twin hard disks that I have / need in my PC anyway. And I can do all editing etc on the one machine. Then I convert the data to DIVX and end up with about 200 megabytes per hour perfect quality TV. On one DVD (dual layer) I can have about 40 hours of TV shows. This is how I store all my Seinfelds and Xfiles etc. Then take the dvd and watch it on laptop when I am
camping at night. bloody terrific, and everyone else suddenly starts crowding around too... like the big screen plasma ad for the soccer...
cheers
