Do Optus phones work with the Iridium network?

Telstra satphones are Iridium satphones so no conflict.

The Telstra one only works because of the way the Telstra Iridium service works in with it's international roaming system.

I don't understand that relationship but it was explained that way by a Telstra person when I was doing my original homework on it.

It was interesting to see that after it has been widely discussed on here (EO) the last 4x4 Monthly gold special on travel in NSW has recommended the International roaming GSM card method as a viable alternative for emergency comms.

How long will this last before Telstra catch on? Lets hope its so engrained into their system they can't get rid of it.

Or that the changeover to 3G doesn't effect it.

Telstra have set up an arrangement with the Iridium Network to allow charging of Iridium calls to a Telstra Mobile phone bill - that's why it works with a Telstra SIM Card.

At $2.60 per minute for outgoing and INCOMING calls, I don't think this is hurting Telstra too much. Features like this is one of the reasons I am with Telstra Mobile.

Optus, Vodafone etc have no such arrangement so it it won't work with any other's SIM card.
