One of our biggest gripes has been no place to go for a 'day' of driving out of
Adelaide. Southern Flinders or Coorong were just a bit too far away. Came across www.saundersgorge.com.au/ on sunday and found it very enjoyable. Only 29kms out the back of Mt Pleasant. Worth a drive. Takes about 2hrs but we did it in about 4hrs with a lunch stop etc. Best
views also.

Stu,
We used to go there heaps for picnics when the kids were much younger & we lived in
Murray Bridge. It was just an un-marked location then. The work Commodore had no problems. Then
the gorge got 'closed' and we had to find another picnic spot(s). Just a bit further down the
creek is quite OK for a small BBQ.
We had spots around
Punthari,
Black Hill,
Cambrai, Harrogate, etc, that were favourites also. (it's not cool to do that picnicing stuff now that we live in
Adelaide..........)
However, maybe the route is now actually a 4 wd route over differnt land, as opposed to the former 2wd public access?
Cheers

I wouldn't say it's a Warraweena or skytrek but yes we did engage 4wd. Low range on a couple of climbs and also decents just to take it slowly over the rocks.

Perhaps you might have a stickybeak at 4wd_out_of_adelaide - it's a yahoo group pertaining to 4wd matters in SA.
(For what it's worth, IMHO, that site does not compete against this site - it is a totally different model, addressing another audience).
Cheers

Gossy,
thanks for that - will have to check it out.
I would have liked to bring our Xtrail as
well, but they say you must have low range for the 4wd track.

there was a couple of
places where low range was used (climbing up a couple of hills). We also used low range coming down a couple of hills also but you could do the descents in high 1 and just play with the brakes on the way down though.

I haven't actually been myself but the concensus seems to be that you don't actually need 4WD.
If I am wrong I would be happy because it provides an option close to
Adelaide (of which there are few)

We did use 4wd low in both climbing and coming down. There was a couple of hills which you would not get up in High 1 (riding your clutch all the way!). Low range was also used coming down a few hills also (rather than have the brakes glowing red in High range). As you say, our options are few and this is definately worth a drive. Don't expect a Warraweena or Skytrek but it is good fun and close to
Adelaide for just a day outing.
We left home at 9am, took our time on the drive including lunch and got home in time for dinner. Can't complain about that!! Cheers,

Sounds good Gossy,
We are going shortly with some friends who are complete novices. From what Ive heard and what you've said it sounds like a fun inexpensive family outing.
