Last year I replaced my trusty 75 series Troopy with an intercooled 91 HDT 80 (for wifes comfort, she goes very quiet when I make comments about there was nothing wrong with the troopy), aside from the fact that I replaced the head and then had to have the engine rebuilt last year it performs very
well.
Oil consumption - My issue is that it uses about 2 to 2.5 l of oil between
services ( the Mech that did the rebuild reakons this is ok), only seems to smoke (gray blue and smells like unburnt fuel) on cold start ups no other signs of were it is going. Is it normal
Oil Pressure - the gauge has only ever reaches the maker specified lower level on the gauge once again I have been assure it is ok but I have yet to test this with a master gauge. Is the oil pressure gauge just like the main
tank fuel gauge and not to be trusted
Apart from the compulsory time in town to pay for my offroad wanderings, the vehicle does a reasonable amount of off road touring and tows a Supreme out back van when the track allows

I trust you do 5000km
services. If so 2-2.5 litres seem a bit excessive. My hilux 2.8 turbo would burn around 0.5 to 1 litre in 5000kms. How much oil does the Toy hold?

Stewy, Have a '97 HD-FT 80 series, with 205K on it. It's standard except for
snorkel and 3" exhaust. Have just done 5,000km trip to Brissy & back, with minimal oil use, say 0.5L. Did have a 90 model turbo that used a little more, but think it had had a hard life before we got it. Would say that consumption you quoted is a bit high for recon engine. Is that only when you are pulling the 'van?
Oil pressure sits at around half, but does drop a little on idle. Once revs are up then it's back to "normal". We've never had any dramas with main fuel
tank gauge either.
Does smoke a little when cold, all the time, but it stops when warm.
Why did you need a new head, Stewy, did timing belt break?
We do 5K oil changes, and 10k oil filter changes. Always use the genuine fuel filter meant for turbo models. Oh yeah, change t/belt before 100K are up, cheap part at $50. Happy travels, hooroo...

Robert, Have been using Shell Rimula X 15W/40 for years and have found no problems with it. Like you we have a ticking noise in our engine at idle, worries the Wife, but I try to ignore it. It's not very loud, but is intermittent.
Change oil every 5K, and it is only just black at that stage, unless it
has been lenghty time between changes.
Kev, Only bearing problems that have heard of are on earlier IHDT engine, from 90 to about 93. How many cases of bearing failure in Multivalve have you seen? That's a bit scary......Hooroo...

Kev
The problem with the main bearings does not just exist in the factory turbo. It was also in the standard diesels that were built from approx 91 - 94 and seemed to be accelerated by the fitment of aftermarket turbo's. Totota did not PUBLICLY admit the problem existed, however when push comes to shove, they are prepared to meet cost of parts when they are pushed into a corner by someone who knows of the problem and is prepared to do battle with them.

Stewy, Have you checked the condition of the turbo the seals, they may be worn. How many km's
I'd be looking at the Turbo first. Don't forget to change the engine bearings every 80,000km

Your worries with gauges, are not alone...
Mass produced, and 10 yrs old.. I have the same thoughts on my GQ ones.
I have actually got a Dash Pod and a swag of VDO Gauges to go in it, For the Turbo and for Oil Pressure and Temp....
I think for a few $100 its worth doing..
Yota Freaks, which Yota motor is the one with dud main bearings from new that Yota replaced 100's of free of charge??

Early models only, Truckster, up to about 93, I think. Later models are as safe as a Nissan! Hooroo..
