Evening all
I just finished installing the GPS and laptop into the car and it all works very
well....however I need software for the mapping. I will get Oziexplorer down the track I just want something now for driving around town. I tried using a mates navman software but that didn't work it was trying to find the navman unit.
Is there anything else I can use. I have mapsource somewhere here in a box but can't find that now. I tried a search in google to find some software but didn't have much luck

Hi Troll,
Why wouldn't you install Oziexplorer for about $140 for the trips around town. It gets you used to the program so you will actually be able to use it when you get out here on your bush trip. You can scan and copy high definition local Qld maps of your locale and use them at home. That will introduce you to calibrating and importing maps other than the CD variety.
Give it a go!

Hi troll,
with the free version or trial one you can't import and calibrate your own scanned maps. You can however play with the software and learn some of it's capabilities.
Borrow someone's NATMAP CD to get an idea how the CD set works in your area ?? what is your area.
A little knowledge gained now is infinite wisdom in the bush in times of strife.

If your looking for "Navman" type software with voice commands and directions for Australia, you can't go past Destinator maps on Mapmonkey or FreeDrive for a PC running Windows. Topo maps are great in the bush, but won't help you find an adresss in a strange town or city. Most of this type of software is incompatable on a PC and is only suitable to the device it came with.
This would have to be the most popular option.
Also look for "VisualGPSXP"

Hi Col & Jan,
That monitor is available from Brash Imports or ebay for around $500. It is a P0701A touch screen. I use drivers from the VM170, which is the same screen that is sold in the US. The touch feature has a USB interface.
They can also supply reversing cameras at reasonable cost.

I think you are referring to the Visual GPS XP software. You should be able to download it online.

Most street navigation programs are made for PDA's and not laptops. If you want a street navigation program on your laptop, the one that I use is called Freedrive and it is free. The catch is that it runs on Destinator (PDA navigation software) maps so you need to get ahold of them from somewhere.
To get Feredrive, you just register at this site and then you can download it. I used it on the weekend and it worked great. I picked up a cheap laptop holder from Supercheap and with a couple of easy mods it all went great.

Try Bittorrent's for Destonator 3......older maps but at least you can have a look prior to investing in the latest Destonator 6.

Just what is 'FreeDrive" ?? I have heard it mentioned a few times, but can't seem to evaluate what it does??
We're running OziExplorer & Destinator3 on a iPAQ 2110 PDA.

Freedrive allows you to run Destinator on a PC - a desktop computer as opposed to a hand held device.
