Hi all, I'd like a couple of opinions on what to do about my dead hilux 2.8. I *cough* drowned it in the weekend and broke it's internals, turbo let go with a huge cloud of smoke too, very impressive but wasn't really worth the cost =/

Soooo.... I've got two options that I'm considering (I don't want to do a conversion). I can either get a brand new crated Toyota 2.8 long (engine minus injectors and pump) from Toyota for about $5500 or I can spend a similar amount rebuilding by existing engine. Previous owner had spent a fair bit of money on the engine rebuilding it, oversized and balancing.

Am I better off getting a new one with all new bits or should I rebuild my old one given that it has had some performance mods made to it ?

Regards, Clark

I always said Id buy a new crated one if my engine went while I had our 4 Runner and IMHO think it would be the way to go.Get the turbo checked out, bolt it straight on and away you go,minimal delay.

Yeah F**k Rebuilding it for a joke, too much time and effort for the same outcome as you would get with a new crate engine.

Hi Clark,
I think the new engine would be best as you may have done other damage to old unit such as crankshaft and con rods.
I would also get injectors and pump and turbo checked and serviced as well as it will complete new engine job.

Cheers Pesty

Have you checked out prces on second hand engines, most come with a warranty and at a fraction of the cost. And you will get all the bits and pieces that you drowned. Just another thought
Cheers Andrew

Generally true, however I know from personal experience that the Toyota 3L diesel's are outrageously expensive secondhand.

Hi there Clark, Why not drop in a 5L 3 litre, not the e model as it has electronic pump, prior to 2000model has the same pump as the 2.8, there are a sh@t load of 5L's out there, they are a better motor and dont have the trouble the 2.8 did in regards to bearings etc, where are you located at and is yours IFS or leaf spring front end ??? Just a thought, I know you dont want to do any mods but as far as I know these will drop straight in only differance being the exhaust manifold, and if you have leaf spring you will have to change over the sump pan as the ifs is a differant shape. Other than that I believe it is a straight swap over. Also might pay to put a snorkel on for next time, $400 compared to 5k big difference. Regards Steve M

From what Ive been told the 5L is a weakest motor of the 2.4,2.8 and 3.0 range.

Hi there Nick, you could be right, Ive only ever heard bad reports on the 2.8's due to lack of oil changes and are not forgiving in the bearings department. My mate has the 5L with after market turbo has now done 190k and so far so good, not saying your wrong, I have been humming and haring for the last 2 months on wether to turbo myn or not and have come up with more negatives then +++ 's so am going to sell and get a patrol, as I want something very capable off road as well as being able to tow our camper which the 2.8 wont do with out a struggle epescially up hills. Regards Steve M

I'd buy the crated engine all day long, as soon as you bring in modifications and the human element you change tolerances and the potential for problems is increased, it's a fact of life, ask any good honest engine builder or mechanic. Best intentions sometimes don't allow for Murphys Law.
