We are going camping to Kalbarri and Shark Bay for around 8 nights, in caravan parks....still getting SWMBO desensitized to the whole process...

i am getting a little pressure from home to take a TV, firstly i am not sure I am all that keen but also i doubt i could fit it in. One option is to buy a digital tuner card and take my laptop...one thought is whether there is digital TV in those regionas beyond ABC and SBS...

anyone here tried this or know where I can look, have googled but difficult to see current information?

For information on Digital TV availability all you need is the postcode and then go to Site Link and plug the postcode into it.

Don't take it. personally i think the whole reason for going camping is to get away from TV pushing rubbish in your face, wanting you to buy things you don't need or to watch their program. Go and appreciate the bush.

If you have children use the opportunity to play cards or board games with them. if the caravan park has a games room go and play in there with them. they will probably end up enjoying this more than watching the idiot box. there will be plenty of time to watch TV when they get home. they WILL survive 8 days without it.

Barnesy

ps. what's SWMBO?

Rob I don't think it's technically correct to use the words "camping" & "TV" in the same sentence ;-) They just don't go together.
Try this.....take your watch off, turn the mobile phone off, don't buy any newspapers, buy a slab of beer & a bottle of wine then go & talk to the couple in the caravan next door.....now you're camping. Just promise the wife you'll stay in a Hotel next year.
PS: Sorry I can't help you with your query.
Cheers Craig..........

Spot on Craig. My kids grew up without TV while camping and telling me now how good that was. The kids will make you feel bad for not taking one but in years to come they remember the good times you had playing games.
I still dont take a TV camping and turn my mobile off as soon as I leave home.
Otherwise why bother?
Enjoy the outdoors and the people out there.

cheers
Reiner

Ok hear is what you do, Say yes I have packed the TV it’s in that Box Marked Recovery gear LOL,

Then fill they day’s 4Wding and checking out the aria. Shark bay you could even go out on a Fishing charter for one of the days.

Last time I was in Shark bay I used 120Ltrs of diesel in 2 ½ days (Just about all of that was off-road), basically if it wasn’t my turn to go out on the boat fishing I Grabbed the key’s to the Cruiser dumped the Boat trailer at the house and zoned in on the closest 4WD track.. It’s so much better when A. It’s not your 4WD and, B. You aren’t paying for the Fuel, LOL

Kalbarri> Well haven’t spent much time there only 1 night and we camped at the top of a gorge Out of the Nat park, Just Spotted what Looked like a Track on the right along the Kalbarri accesses road and Followed a sandy track along a fence line till we hit some more tracks than ended up in a kick ass location. Next morning we did a bit of exploring on foot and by 4WD then continued on back to Perth around 12.00 after scratching the bleep out of my metallic paint LOL.

As for TV I think you will need a big F**king antenna to get the reception so you could watch the TV. A better option is the Laptop with 2 or 3 DVD’s if the family need it that badly.

Well Robjo,

It didn't take long. The self professed experts come along and tell you how you should camp. That they don't believe in camping and TV is their choice, as is your's to take one with you.

We love to serenity of the bush but I still pack the laptop and a few DVD's. We've only used it once, on a wet, cold night where sitting around the fire wasn't an option. We got into the van, plugged the fliptop into the inverter, put the gas heater on, had a few beverages and had a lovely night.

Your life, your choice. If it makes it more enjoyable for the GLW to go camping with a TV, do it.

Who the hell are these self righteous pontificators to tell you how to live your life?

Cheers,

Jim.

Well this self righteous pontificator was asked a question and he replied. Of course it's everybody's choice you dope. As a child i remember only a few trips. all of them involved the family doing something we didn't usually do, playing as a family. none of them involved watching TV, something we did far too much of at home.

If you had young children Jim and took them camping would you prefer them to be outside playing in the bush or inside sitting on their bums watching big brother or neighbours?

Next morning> felt fantastic, well till we got up that is LOL

Exploder you may be just some random but i'm an extremely important pontificator. Excuse me Jim if my cynical view on commercial TV rubbed you the wrong way. I was hoping that the positive flip-side of the coin would open your eyes to where i was coming from.

Barnesy,

You did not answer the question. You gave an unsolicited opinion. The question was not, "Should I take a TV?" rather, "What sort of TV setup works best?". You chose to have a dig at anyone who should have the temerity to camp in a fashion that you disagree with.

Just out of interest, not that it is relevant, I don't watch TV. I find it interminably boring. That is my choice. I do not, however, judge others according to how they pursue their recreational pursuits. Nor do I preach to them according to my personal taste.

And yes, I do have children. As teenagers they still camp with us. Collect firewood, swing an axe, build a fire etc. To make life more enjoyable for them in the bush, I offer them the option of watching a DVD. We even carry a portable toilet and Coleman Hot Water Service. Bush camping doesn't have to be a rough lifestyle if you don't want it to be.

Preach as you choose. Call me a dope. This fine country is at this stage still a democracy.

I wish you well.

Cheers,

Jim.

Look Jimbo i don't want to get into an argument with anyone. If you look closely Robjo was actually pondering whether or not to take the TV and caving in to the pressure.

I'm sure he is old enough to look after himself and respond to his own answers without overly sensitive people insulting others.

If people want to watch TV camping thats up to them. As long as they dont make too much noise. It's their loss because i'll be watching the sunset and apprecitaing the Australian bush.

I'm not ashamed of trying to encourage people to appreciate the beautiful Australian bush.

Robjo

Ya need to remember that a laptop consumes approx 6-9 amps where as a lcd tv consumes approx 1.3 amps. We have just gone through the same thought process and ditched the laptop tv idea and bought an lcd tv.

If its only 8 days i wouldnt take it. We only bought ours because when we go...we aint commin back. We will be permanent.

We are about to go on a three week trip with the kids and we have purchased a lCD TV with DVD built in, afraid we can not play games etc all the time and the TV will give myself and the missus our much needed escape and rest from the kids whilst away as well as keeping him entained and we will know where he is.
We will definitly not be watching it all the time or every night but only when we need a "Break"

Guys,

I am with you on this one, TV is unlilkely for all the reasons, we've got one of the portable DVD thingos for the trip to keep the kids quiet in the car, or at least quieter....but two years ago the concept of sleeping in a tent was not an option for the wife, then we went for a couple of shorter stays, but all in controlled envioronments...for me it is about how to get them along to more and more outings until they see the light...then we could do some real stuff. ...and if i need to cart a TV to do it so be it, I doubt we would use it much anyway.

How about you appeal to her female side....

Explain that while you'd like to take the TV you'd hate to see it damaged necessitating an expensive repair or replacement - and that you'd rather spend the cost of a compact 34cm on taking her out to dinner or buying something for her as a momento to remember the trip by.

..... waiting for the female forumites to start flaming now.... but it'd probably work.

TV's and camping don't go unless you need a screen for the kids to watch movies or play games when their bored or it's bleep inf down outside, if the missus wants you to take one for her, then your in trouble..! LOL
