Hi folks - was reading archived posts till the wee hours this morning on the various offroad tyres. Just wondered what your opinions were for offroad tyres for a tvan. Many trips will be Vic high country but will also cover general outback touring, maybe a Cape trip. etc.

If I can find some good second hand tyres I'd consider those, but I've looked around and only the occassional set of ST's seem to come up and not in Vic. Most others are knackered/last legs tyres.

Currently have 3 x 33" Procomp Muddies which I ahd on my old camper which are too big for the Tvan. I'd be prepared to swap for some 265/75 Coopers/MTRs or other premium tyres. The PC's have only done 1,000km and are in perfect condition.

Anyway, interested on what you think would work the best.

regards
Mike

Personally, I would go with matching the tow vehicle. Makes sense for spares etc, and also I have enough rims to rotate the tyres in the way that the vehicle gets 4 new ones, the trailer and the 2 spares get the old ones off the car. They all match and can be swapped at any time, and the tyres on the trailer are renewed (be it secondhand off the car) periodically rather than being on there for years and cracking etc.

Cheers Andrew

My approach is to have matching tyres with the car. I have some old BFG ATs - 275/70x16 if you can sue them.

Thanks Peter. If you can send me some details on the BFG's: age, condition, pics etc. I'm really after as new kit.
How have you found the MTR's over various terrain. Do you run these on a camper?
Thanks
Mike

Mike,

Yes now have MTRs on the trailer and car. I found 2 second hand MTRs for spare on the trailer and extra spare for the car (9 hweels in total). The 285s will fit on the Ultimate which is good.

The BFGs are about 15% left so still OK for spares. Have 4 to choose from.

Match to tow vehicle = 3 extra spares in the worst case scenario . Personaly recon that if you can afford a Tvan you can afford new matching tires ,20/30thou$ for the camper ,whats $6/900 for new tires.

It's all been said.

As well as matching the tyres I took the time to find 3 extra orignal equipment Nissan wheels (exactly the same as the car). I picked them up at tyre/wheel retailers. Took a bit of patience and some looking around but was worth it.

Thanks guys. I currently run 33" PC's all round on GU wheels. The 33' won't fit under the camper, so it's either tearing up some money and replacing the trailer rubber with something an inch smaller, or tear up a bucket of money and replace the lot. The latter is not very appealing. A slightly smaller wheel will still get you out of trouble if desparation calls - aside of the car's spare & tyre repair kits etc.

Still keen to hear what others are using on their campers and product feedback etc

Cheers

I'm assuming you do actually need new tyres on the Tvan, in which case I would say go for the same size as OE on the Tvan and don't go for flash, but go for something in LT spec. They aren't expensive!

As above, run the same rims and tyres as the car.
The trailer gets the half worn ones, and after a trip get put back on the back of the car for running around town until they need replacing or another trip.
That way newish tyres on the car and half worn for the trailer, and 3 spares for everything with 9 rims total.
You might have to go down to 32" over time to make it work.

Agree with the same all-round, however i can't fit 33'' on the camper without major mudguard work. So, i did have 235/75 R15 savero A/Ts & replaced with 30.5 x 9.5 R15 0n 7'' sunnies in a Firestone RMT @ $ 150ea fitted, tuff tyre nice tall/straight sidewalls, not an over agresive pattern, who whats to throw rocks at their truck anyhoo !!

Cheers

Hi Mike

We matched the wheels and tyres to our car when buying our Tvan. We use Wrangler ATR's. They aren't bad tyres but wear a bit quickly (about 50k sees them out given that you change tyres before they are completely worn out if you want to stay out of trouble) I wouldn't consider second hand tyres because the tyres on the Tvan seem to wear out at the same rate as the car so must be working just as hard.

We always use 8 ply light truck tyres and in 4 major outback trips (2 with the Tvan) we are still yet to have a flat.

Cheers and enjoy your Tvan
