Tried radio repair
places - they won't touch it because they do not know codes and they would only replace it. Suggested I go to GM Dealer - I did and guess what! THEY WERE GREAT CREDIT WHERE IT IS DUE - Gave me guy straight away. Here are the tips:
Burned CD's are a different width to commercial CD's and laser sometimes cannot read - Freezes up.
Do not insert known damaged CD's - Above applies.
Blow the dust out of it occasionally
Tips to fix -
Take out fuses, both the radio and CD player go off - Very quickly re-insert fuses otherwise you may need the codes to get everything going again - (we discovered this morning that the Jack allows a re-insertion for at least a small amount of time before codes are needed - News to the mechanic also)
then
Try to eject the disk
Turn off radio and restart it
Hold your finger on start button (radio) to allow it to reset and at the same time press eject - My disk popped out.
They tell me that sometimes it is just a matter of taking out the fuses and re-inserting them - triggers eject when re-setting.
If nothing works - MONEY
File it guys - you never know when it might happen and you may not get the great GM service I received today.
PS
I do not work for them - The opposite applies - It has been a very fractious relationship - hence my praise when they really try.

This reminds me of how some time back GM respobded to Bill Gates with "if cars were computers..."
Very funny.
Now, why couldn't they just make the eject button WORK properly in the first place, huh?

Hi there'
Just a tip that may not apply to a car cd player. On computer CD players there is is small 2mm hole in the tray that moves in and out. Use a straightened out paper clip to push into the hole and the tray will eject WITH THE POWER OFF.
Remove CD. Continue on.
Cheers

Good point there. A lot of CD players are not compatible with burnt CD's (Rewritables), and they can get stuck. This is usually the case with older cars!

Get a 3gb Ipod. Copy ALL your cd's then leave them at home. Problem solved.
