Evening all,
I'm installing a brake controller in my 2003 Prado.
It has an original 7 pin flat toyota wiring harness and hitch.
My question is:- Does the wiring on the towing harness that would be plugged into the existing vehicle harness have a wire already in it that can be used for the output of the brake controller?
If so where might i pick this wie up under the dash or is there a plug under the dash that is used for this purpose. Again in the existing standard harness in the vehicle.
I'm interested in not having to run another wire through the vehicle.
Trying to work smarter not harder!
Cheers
Garth

Hi Garth
I fit Prodigy and Voyagers all the time and have found it best to run 2 new wires to the back of the car. To prevent cruise control and other problems bring a stop light source from the tail light back to the Prodigy and run a heavy 4.8mm2 wire from the Prodigy to the trailer plug. Make sure the trailer and car have a good earth in the plug as
well.
The Prodigy requires a very good earth and strong positive current. Run a pair of 4.8mm2 wires to the Prodigy from the battery via a 20 amp auto reset breaker.
I know this sounds hard but to have good reliable brakes you need a good connection and good 12v supply.
Regards Derek.

Derek,
Thanks for the reply.
I've just had a look inside the vehicle and found the wiring from the plug up into the rear left hand side( where the jack is stowed) has the heavier gauge blue wire and also the white earth. Cant find the earth as such but did some continuity checks around the vehicle from the plug and its ok on bare metal.
Now I know why you say to run a pair from the tail light back to the front.
It's a bit of a nightmare under the dash and around the brake pedal.
I'm an electrician but not an auto elect and at 50 my vision and contortionist skills are best left to younger more energetic types.
So I think I'll be following your sound advice thank you very much.
Just need to figure out the p/s side but as you said I may come of the battery as you have also pointed out.
Might even get an auto elect to do the whole job.
Pity I'm in
Wollongong otherwise I'd be on your doorstep!
Thanks again.

Hi Garth,
It is not hard to fit but sometimes it is easier to just pay someone to do their job and you make the money with yours.

Hi Derek,
Here is a link if you want to pay some one to do it for you. I had an electric brake controller fitted to my Prado. He used the existing 7 pin plug and ran the extra wire.
They are at Picton, so may even come down to
Wollongong
