Hi all,

Any suggestions/recommendations on what minimum size (diameter) axle that should be fitted to an off road camper trailer with approx. fully loaded weight of 1300kg?

It at present has a 45mm round axle fitted, with '6 leaf springs' all bolted to what looks like ordinary box trailer spring hangers. It has only done about 12,000km since new and not very much rough stuff. I want to upgrade the axle etc before verturing too far off road.

45mm, should be OK, but make sure that it isn't oversprung & the springs actually work. A lot of CTs are too stiff, shock absorbers would be good too!

Thanks Shaker, they seem to be working Ok, probably because of the loaded weight.

make sure they slim line bearings [1400kg rated] not LM [1000kg] your outer bearing no should be 12749 not 11949 & use quality bearings not cheap chinese units & also check that it is a solid axel not hollow with stub axels welded in each end if so get a 45mm solid sq axel

Have a look at www.alko.com.au/vehicle/catalogue.html and do your own research.

All of the trailers we build for offroad are 45mm solid, 1.5t rated minimum. We use HD bearings to suit either the Nissan or Toyota 6 bolt hubs. Our springs are always the eye to eye offroad type by industrial springs in Adelaide. These have an anti rebound spring fitted so does not require shockers. Simplicity at it's best.

Thanks Paul, wish I was close to your shop so I could get some work done as there are a few things on my trailer that I'm not convinced will go the distance

Kev, Surely there is someone in Qld who can help. There are apparently 70 odd CT manufacturers in your State. If you can find a specialist builder, they could help you out. I don't manufacture many trailers but I make sure they will handle most abuse handed out to them,
Cheers
