Our map marks a caravan
park south of
Alice Springs as 'Jims Place Caravan
Park' but I think it may also be referred to as 'Stuarts
Well CP'. We were thinking of leaving the van here or maybe overnighting to go and see
Rainbow Valley. Any thoughts?
Whats is the CP like? Is
Rainbow Valley worth a look? Any other suggestions as to where to leave the van?

Harry,
We have just returned home from that area. Where are you coming from and going to?
Because of time constraints, we left AS and headed down the Maryvale Rd and dropped off our CT at
Oak Valley (11 km in along the Hugh River SR). We then continued to
Chambers Pillar and returned to
Oak Valley for the night ($9 pp). It has no powered sites but does have flush
toilets and hot showers (via a chip heater).
The next day, we headed west along the Hugh River SR and then up the hwy ducking into
Rainbow V for lunch and then back to AS. You can get a ruggedised van into RV. There are drop
toilets there and gas bbqs but no showers.
IMHO, I would not devote a lot of time to RV.
Chambers Pillar was much more interesting.
Regards
Jon W

We'll be coming from Alice heading towards
the Rock. Time may not permit a trip to
Chambers Pillar, though it does sound very interesting. Thanks for your input!

Harry,
If you are able to do one overnighter, I would choose Chambers P over RV. Others may not agree.

Agree that Chambers P is a better
campsite than RV

I think the cheapest option would be to pay for room and board unless it was the night after you turning one on.

We left
Rainbow Valley to find somewhere to
camp, as RV is NOT tent friendly & the area to
camp is very small & was basically full. Jim's place was the aim. When we got there all the females with us got scared (as too did some of the blokes I reckon !) of
camping there, due to the number of indigenous, semi permanently camped at the back of the
camping area.
We moved on & camped off the Hugh River Station track.
At the time, the track in to RV was very corrugated & a lot of bulldust.

The black fellas at Jims place are not permanent and very rarely
camp out the back.
If they do they
camp a fair way away and Jim keeps a pretty tight rope on them.
If your going to be worried by that I reckon you might be heading into the wrong territory.

goodday harry
we have been to
rainbow valley a couple of times and each time it looks different because of sun angles the same as
the rock chambers pillar is similar in changing moods
depending on the size of the van where you leave it
out first trip to rv was an easy afternoon drive from alice to see the sunset on the formations
the trip to
chambers pillar is a long day trip but we made it an overniter so that we could see all that sun a nd moon had to offer
gotta go teas ready

Yeh,
Rainbow Valley is worth a look,
Jims Place has a caravan
park with powered sites ( dirt not grass), cabins for rent and a
free camping area.
Its a pub and roadhouse with a pool and next door is the camel farm.
I havent been down the
rainbow valley road for a while but would recomend leaving your van at Jims.
