Heading from
Perth to
Brisbane to pick up the near new caravan we bought - which is the quickest route to take to get us there from
Broken Hill to
Brisbane?
PS trying to get there driving pretty much straight there - how long should we allow?

Dian, make it as quick as you want to
Broken Hill, then to
Cobar, Nevertire, turn left to go to Gilgandra, then on up through Coonabarabran and the Newell Highway to
Brisbane.
Depends what sort of vehicle your in and how much driving you want to do at night.
I live in
Broken Hill and the roos are plentifull around here at night, and from here to
Cobar especially, is 'avoid the night if possible, else about 80Kph I reckon.
No accommodation between here and
Cobar except
Wilcannia, and that's only 2 hours from
Broken Hill.
Not too long ago I think we did
Broken Hill to Coonabarabran in about 12 hours with a couple of wee stops. Didn't go all the way to
Brisbane but it would be another long day.
Hope you have good seats in your vehicle.
Dave

We went from
Bridgetown to
Bundaberg in 4 days to get our caravan, stopping at dusk and starting at first light. We went
Broken Hill,
Cobar, Warren, Gilgandra, Coonabarabran and up the Newell. We even took a nice drive through the Warrumbungles when i took a wrong turn out of Gilgandra. We were going to sleep in the swag but as it rained in the early part, we stopped at Motels (at Balladonia stopping early because the rain was so heavy) motel at Minnippa, a cabin at
Cobar and on site van at
Dalby (north of
Brisbane), getting to Bundy mid morning. We did not book accommodation - just stopped at the best option without driving in 'kangaroo - cow - goat time'. Jim did most of the driving, and i drove for a bit after lunch while he had a catnap - trouble is i would stop to take photos and he would wake up a take over the driving. I hope you enjoy the drive as much as we did - it was our first trip east. We came back on a slightly different route coming back to
Wilcannia from
Bourke, then back
home the same way.

Thanks for all the replies. I think we'll do like Motherhen - stop at motels etc. - this is the possible route we were looking at too - just not sure whether to go via Wagga and thru the middle, but quess the quickest will be the best this trip up.
We both share the driving but wouldn't wat to travel more than dawn to dusk - if that - even if it takes 5 or 6 days doesn't matter, then we'll take 3 or 4 weeks to come
home via a more coastal route.

Di, If you're not under pressure to get there real quick like we were, go the way that has what you want to see; it won't take that much longer, compared to the trip all the way across Australia. It was all new to us, so roughly the most direct route was chosen, and we found the mountainous country with lush flats of black soil and irrigated crops of the east side of NSW and Qld just magnificent.

Hi Bill,
We went the way Cruiser says, last year.
1st leg Brissie to B'
Hill 17hrs straight (night stuff Bris to Gigandra). Then strictly dawn to dusk, B'
Hill to
Ceduna,
Ceduna to
Norseman (
well, left 1/2 hr b4 sunup for that leg), then easy day Noerseman to
perth with kalgoorlie detour. That's without van.
You'll need more fuel stops on your return of course; probably need an extra night stop between Norseman/
Ceduna - that's 1200k - also at Gilgandra too.
It's a great drive - enjoy!
