I said to a guy last week I would post my pics of the new glovebox where the airbag isn't in my GU. It could still do with some tidying up but it now looks pretty good and secure with the key lock the standard one doesn't have.

Yes Wim, though the internal boxing is aluminium. I made the template for it and had it made to slide in to place. I didn'[t weld the aluminium either - actually Member - Sharyn M's hubby did that for me. I did the cutting out, hinging, lock fitting and messy siliconing that is in the process of cleaning up.

Hope things are all well there mate, best wishes to Judy too...........

Reckon the drive down would make it an expensive glovebox mate. Takes a bit of fiddling though

Excellent John! I was going to do the same thing so that I could insert my 8" Lilliput touch screen in there, which is about 12cm high and about 15cm wide. I was thinking of a sliding rail set-up so that I could pull it out and then swing it up horizintally when in use. Then swing it down vertically and slide it back into the storage area when not in use.

Do you think that a 12x15 cm screen (lying vertically ie flat) would fit in there? Also how do you start by taking out the panel to begin with?

Peter I should probably not made a flat floor to the box and allowed deeper section before the cross bar behind the dash. That would have allowed greater volume perhaps.

You need to remove the glove box which is about 8 screws to get access to the back of the panels. Using a short Phillips screw driver undo the six screws round the perimeter of the facia panel or future glove box lid.

I used an angle grinder to cut the edge of where the internal of the box will be and a key hole saw across the bottom of the box to cut off a trim edge across the front, jutting toward the passenger. There is a piece of steel that goes across the opening from side to side too that takes the screws for the glovebox (lower) catch. I had to rebend it the opposite way to allow it to be screwed to the floor of the new box. It is only thin gauge.

I was thinking of putting my thin laptop in the box on an angle, but more inclined to think it would be better in behind the radio and UHF putting those into a roof compartment. I liked what I saw of that post a month or so back that Truckster put up. Screen set back in there with mouldings.

Meant to say that round the front of the new box is the air feed pipes to the front vents. It would be easy to get air flow there to cool all sorts of hardware. The box isn't as big as I had hoped, but a considerable improvement on the standard one taking additional items with a lock. The lock was about $9 I think. I used some more aluminium on the face of the box lid cutting back the screws and their mounts on the new lid.

Yep Steve, have two glove boxes one above the other, even one you can lock and see into when it is open.

Hows Denny by the way? Hope you are well too..........

Have a great trip both of you. I won't really mind if you get rained in on the Simpson crossing, so take plenty of food, it would be good for Australia, widespread rain. Perhaps wet there before you go be better mate.

Have fun

Thats a neat job. Thanks for posting it. I was hoping to find a lock you can open with or without the key that does not protrude from the box. I'm still looking. It's the mighty velcro for mine for now but will finish it properly when I return from my trip.

Thanks mate. The reason to put the lock there was easier to reach from the drivers side if you wanted, but also that corner sat out slightly more and the lock holds it in.

The depth of the lock is just great enough to get past the floor of the lid too, I have to cut the screw mounts back just a bit with plyers and shorten the screews slightly too. The key does come out and it looks like a bought one with just the lock in there. Will probably blacken it. The silicone needs that too.

I'm glad you said the corner stuck out more on that side I spent an hour trying to figure out why mine did that. It must be the same with others so I can stop looking now. It's not much different but enough to catch my interest and frustrate me when I looked at it.

Drifta. I liked the sort of catch too but it is something to do with the hinging that it sticks out more that side I think. It doesn't look at all out of place being there either. I didn't like the catch on the glovebox on pictured outer limits.

As for disclosing the lid stuck out that side. LOL, I guess I am a relatively straight shooter. Not that I disclose all. ;-)

The new lid is a pretty close fit all around. I have given the catch a bit of a tweak and twist to make sure it catches nicely, holding it in place.
