I have posed this question on other 'user forums' with no response, and realize that the vast knowledge of ExplorOz people might be able to help.
We are using OziExplorer CE on iPAQ PocketPC PDA. There is the feature of attaching sound files to some options including waypoint proximity, GPS fix and speed alerts. Currently we can get a low indescreet 'burp' with the speed alerts.
How is the set up for waypoints acheived- is it possible to give directions (eg Turn left etc) and the other audio prompts etc.
Any assistance would be appreciated.

Troop a dour
I believe the 'turn left' sounds that you are after actually come with Navigational software....
I have a navman icn320 and it is Satelite navigation as if says "in 200m turn left" or whatever the case maybe..
I believe there are some good softwares out there, there is one called map monkey not sure if you can install this on pda but it wouldnt suprise me if there is a install version for _Permanent_Painted_Coatings.aspx installs.
I think they use the destinator maps.
Hope that was of some help?

Hi cipher
Yes, we do also have Destinator on the PDA. It's great for around towns, but lets down a bit in the 'back country"..
The options I mentioned are in OziExplorer- but I can't seem to activate them.
Thanks for your reply.

Hi Troop-a-dour
If'n no one on here can solve the problem for you try emailing Des and Lorraine (info@oziexplorer.com) - I found them to be very helpful in the past.

Hi,
Look at the help text for waypoints in OziExplorer CE.
On my version it says that you have to use the PC version of the program to set proximity alerts for waypoints. You can set both audio and visual alerts.
When the waypoints are downloaded they will work on the CE device.
If you have chosen sound files other than those provided, then they must be downloaded to the "Sound Files" folder on the CE device.
The help file says that the PC version must be 3.90.3d or later.
Remember that these are just proximity alerts, so if if set one to say "turn right" expecting to approach from the south, it will still say the same if you approach from the north.
If you look in the "Sound Files" folder on your device you'll see a whole swag of sound files. Play them and note the filenames of the ones you wish to use.
In the PC version, you just right click on a waypoint and choose "Properties". The window allows you to set the proximity distance and has a button labelled "Attachments"; click it and you can set the names of the files to be used.
Cheers Frank.

Hi Frank
I think you may have started to crack it. Our PC version is 3.95.4.
OK on the Properties for the waypoint attachments- I have a few options there, what do I attach, and where do I get the attachment from??
I do realize that Ozi is NOT a direction finder, and the nominated instruction for the waypoint (eg Turn Left) is only a property.
Sorry for sounding a bit thick- but it is Monday.
Thanks for your help so far,
Troop-a-dour

Hi,
Firstly, if you have "WP Auto Properties" ticked (View/Route) on your PDA, then you should hear auto alerts when you arrive at a waypoint if you are navigating a route. OziExplorer just determines the angle beween the current course and the new one to figure out which sound to play, so unless the waypoints are set with this in mind it can be nonsensical.
I think it is better to use manually entered alerts, though if you have many waypoints on your route that may not be the case.
Check the files that you have loaded with OziExplorer in the "Sound Files" folder. I have a whole swag that I think I downloaded from the web some time back when I was messing with this stuff. If you don't have them I could zip them up and send them to you.
Alternatively, you could just use sound recorder on your PC and record some files yourself. That way you could use any instructions you like. You could have an alert that said "look out for the sharp
rock on the left side of the track" if you had the benefit of someone with local knowledge when planning your trip. All you need to do is download them to your device and remember where you put them, then put the location in the proximity/route attachment textbox for the waypoint. If you don't specify a path then the folder "\OziExplorer\Sound Files\ should be used if it's installed in memory.
Cheers Frank.

OK Frank,
I've been thinking since your last reply. If I give a waypoint an 'attachment' set up in Properties on the PC...I guess the attachment would be at c:\ozi\sound file etc etc. Now if I carry that waypoint (& its attachment) to the PDA- how would the PDA find the file on the c drive of the PC.
Does that sound a bit Irish???

That's why you just enter the file name without the path and place the wav file in the default folder, "Sound Files". This is where Oziexplorer will look for the file if the path isn't entered.
If you look in the folder now you'll see the wav files that are used for the auto alerts; turn right, turn left and go straight ahead along with the default.
If the file is not going to be copied to the default folder on the PDA then the PDA's path is entered on the PC, not the PC's path.
I used the auto alerts a few times to try it and for me it was of little value. Being off-road they don't have the same value as Destinator prompts do. I find I always consult the map anyway, which is why I gave up on the PDA version and always run a notebook when off-road. I'm sure that's not the case for everyone.

3.95.4 is the widely circulated unpaid for version.
The feature you seek is on the current version with a heap of other improvements.
You aren't ripping off Bill Gates on this one. Des is a top aussie bloke with a great product. You won't regret shelling out your $50 for the current version. It's heaps better.
Buy it, install it, load up or create your route and it'll work.
Mine did.

Hi geocacher
Both my PC & CE (PDA) versions of OziExplorer are the full legal registered paid in full versions. I think you'll find 3.95.4 is the latest PC version?? However I do stand to be corrected.

Oops. I sincerely apologise. 3.95.4 is the current version. Not sure where I got my wires crossed.
I am using the same version (thought it was 3.98 but there you go) and the latest CE update and
mine does it automatically. I do a route on the laptop. Transfer it and it just works.
I don't know if theres a configuration file I can download but I'll have a look.

I use Oziexplorer on a PDA and yes the sound features do work (I don't use them as it is annoying to hear countdowns to waypoints etc)
It will only work if using a route you have setup before the trip. As described above for each waypoint you can select to have it say "turn left" etc.
The PDA volume is very low with road noise. My is mounted on an Arkon mount which has the power supply and gps included and it does have an amplifier to boost the sounds. It is still limited by the small speakers and road noise but I have had it telling to which way to turn and counting down to waypoints and playing mp3s as
well which are on the SD card.
So in summary, yes the capability is there and a little play will get it going for you. The benefits of getting it going are questionable. It is not like needing directions in city traffic.

Thanks for that info Alan
I agree the prompts if over used would be a pain in the ....., but the circumstance I would be using the feature would be into unfamilair area, where I have the waypoints and maps etc- the prompt alerts would make it a bit less likely to take a wrong direction turn.

I just did a
test run using 3 or 4 waypoints around
the block (in OziCE)
I created the route manually adding waypoints on CE, and then loaded the route, and navigating forward along the route.
The voice prompts worked perfectly...but as alan said th espeaker volume was very "tinny/hollow"! At freeway speeds it may be inaudible!
I also navigated in a back direction along the route and it also worked perfectly!
OziCE did all the prompting 'automagically' and I only really used minimal waypoints and only 90° turns (ie. no silent waypoints).
I did try a route created in Ozi(PC) and it didn't work(prompting), but I suspect that may have been due to my inadequacies??
I'll have a bit more of a play with it, and post some stuff in GPSAustralia ...it's the first time, I've had a go at it...in fact I haven't created a route in Ozi for over a year, and totally forgot how to :p
