Fuel restriction

Greetings all. A mate of
mine has a very modified (extreem offroad) Hi lux with a EFI 3.8 dunny door motor ( haltec engine management) It suffers from fuel starvation on hard acceleration (fuel pressure drops right off) & no power. All the pumps & filters are jammed into a small storage bin on the side of the truck, The primary lift pump (electric) is of unknown pressure & capacity lifts from the main
tank to a swirl pot/surge
tank, I`m not sure if It`s filtered befor the pump or after, but anyway the filter is one of the Supacheap $ 2.50 plastic thingys, from the surge
tank the fuel goes to a Bosh electric EFI pump, now the pressure seems OK in all but hard acceleration but I can`t vouch for the volume (do they make these pumps to deliver different pressures & volumes for other applications?) Then the fuel goes to a (he reckons) genuine VN EFI filter it being the same size as the dodgy plastic one, I suggest to him there is restriction some were in the system. I suggested, replacing the primary pump with one the same as the secondary, get rid of the small filters & replace with a unit that you know will handle the flow. He reckons I`m a silly old c@#$ & I don`t know what the f@#$ I`m talking about. Am I on the right track... or way off??????

Assuming he has already checked the filters and pumps and they can suplly sufficient capacity then there are one of two possibilites left; One the fuel pump of unkown origin in the fuel
tank may not have sufficient capacity to supply the bigger motor assuming he had the small 4cyl petrol. Secondly and more likely the fuel lines may be too small, or blocked up with crap which equals the same thing. Rather than spending big dollars straight up he should try running a couple of tanks of fuel through the system that contains a good fuel system cleaner additive, Spitfire or better, and then check the filters. If they are gummed up with the deposited crap from the fuel lines, replace the filters and it may be problem solved. If not then he may have to look at running larger
bore fuel lines.
It sounds like you are on the right train of thought, but you can't help those who don't want to be helped.
