95ToyoLandcruiser
A simple question, of the 2 sizes listed above, which should I get for a 95 Toyota Landcruiser. Currently it has 31/10.5R15 on it on 15x8 rims.
I don't mind changing rim size if I need too. I guess my main concern is availablity of the tyres if I should totally stuff 2 of them on one trip. I plan on going to
Cape York, and then maybe Tassie, Flinders,
Vic High Country and Frasier Island. Separate trips though.
Any advice would be great. I just want to know about the size not which brand is better.
Thanks in advance
Richard

the 16inch rims have a larger load rating if thats an issue.
IMHO either will be easy to get, it all depends on what brand you select more than size.. if you want some exotic tire, you will suffer. 285 maybe a little easier than a 33.
if you want a BFG AT etc you will be fine.

Thanks, I am looking at one of 3 tyres, BFG MT, Goodyear MT/R or Cooper ST.

I just looked at the Bridgestone Mud Terrain D673 I think. It is the same price as the others, so now I am even more confused. LOL

There is a reason that the Stone is cheap..
they wear fast, and have wet tissue paper for sidewalls.

No comparrision with construction. 15 inch tyres are much lighter construction but do cost less. Something like 4 ply tread face and 2 ply sidewall vs 3 ply sidewall and 7 ply tread face depending on brand

in regard to your tyre selection question, id recommend you look at the various tyre stats because a 285/75x16 has a different overall diameter when comparing BFG's and Coopers. I looked into this recently and found that the 285 in the Cooper has an overall diameter equivalent to 32.5" whereas the 285 in BFG has an overall diameter of 33" exactly.
Might make a difference if trying to adjust your speedo to get it correct.
Max.

Yeah that was a thought I had but I don't think it is something I am going to worry about as the speedo is already out with the 31's on it.

Richard, I think Max is saying that going from 31's to 33's will affect your speedo more than going to 32.5's.
Also, I think getting 33x12.5's in some remote
places could be tricky. Many more 4x4's using 16 inch tyres these days.

Richard
I have been watching this thread to see the types of response because I also am about to change my tyres over from the 31/10.5R15 to Bridgestone 285/75R16.
Last year I went with my son and and a friend for a trip in WA from
Twilight cove, Baxter cliffs, Israelite to
Esperance.
My sons car Tojo 100 series had Bridgestone 285/75R16 and
mine and the other Tojo was shod with the 31/10.5R15.
Visually the 285 looks massive in diameter compared to the smaller tyre and when we measured with a tape there was a substantial difference tho the figures now escape me. But it was on
the beach where the difference became quite marked. The 285's simply doddled along
the beach with not an effort from the tojo whilst the two shod with 31's were doing it tough with heaps of revs and the amount of "sink in the sand" when the vehicles came to rest was quite pronounced.
When we came to a seaweed stretch this became even more pronounced with the 285 shod vehicle having little trouble but the smaller wheels causing a terrible stench like burnt rubber or clutch.
Still your original question remains I suppose, though because ieven if the overall diameters are the same be it small or large rim, it shouldn't theoretically matter diddly squat what the metal diameter of the wheel is.
Needless to say I'm going the bigger rim and 285 route because at least it will make all tyres inter-changeable between the vehicles when we go bush.
Happy ponderings.

Thanks
John,
You have at least confirmed in my mind that I will definatly be putting on either of the 2 sizes, but still which one. Your choice is made easy by your son having that size, I don't know anyone with either size so ..................... Which is more popular on the road, which size do the majority for people run???

Which is more popular? Easily the 285x16 while the 15s arnt rare they are somewhat on the way out. prob the most common tyre size would be the 265x16

I did a trip to
Cape York in 2001 and was running 285/75R16 & had 2 spares. On the way up, totally stuffed 1 tyre. So, diverted into
Weipa as I thought I'd get a spare there.
I searched everywhere in
Weipa, both for new and secondhand, but no luck sourcing a replacement. The only option, which I didn't take was to air freight one in.
No, admittedly, that was 5 years ago and things might've changed since.

Most common sizes off the beaten track are 750R16, 235/85R16, 265/75R16 and 31x10.5R15. The 285/75R16 can be hard to find, while the 33's are very hard to find.
I'm guess you're talking a 75series LandCruiser here because the '95 80series couldn't take the 15inch rims.

No I was talking the 95 80 Series and it does already have the 15in wheels on it. So I guess it does take them. Thanks for the info on Availability. I am thinking of having 2 spares anyway so it may not be a problem anyway.

If you take 2 spares, you won't have an issue.
All the 80series after late 1992 had 16 inch wheels. If you wanted 15 inch, you had to grind a little bit off the rear brake calipers, so maybe thats been done on yours.
My preference is for 16 inch tyres - they come with stronger casings and higher load indexes. Those 31x10.5R15 tyres you're currently running are usually only 6 ply rating, or load index of 109 which is not much for an 80series, and are more likely to give you grief.
Enjoy all your tripping!!!
Cheers
Phil
