Hi there,
I thought I replace the auto tranny fluid from my GU Patrol. the Nissan manual and the
Gregory's state that the capacity is 12 litres, however, when I drained the sump only 4 litres came out!
It is not that you can do anything wrong, the manual just said remove the drain plug, so what is going on.
Any ideas??

What you drained is the 4 ltrs in the sump. The torque converter holds the rest. I havent done a GU yet but most converters have a drain plug which you will find as you manually rotate the converter. You will find it behind the cover plate which from memory has 10mm bolts on the bell housing.
Im assuming nothing has changed on the GU torgue converter, if so, maybe someone else can tell you how its drained.

Yeah those toque converters are thirsty buggers
Another way that I have used is to just disconnect one of the Transmission Cooler lines and start the car up and as the old fluid is pumped out, simply poor the new stuff in thro the Dipstick tube at the same rate, it is possible you will need to stop the engine to play catch up it gets too far ahead of you.
Or alternatively, pump 1 litre out, turn the engine off and poor one litre back in and repeat 12 times, there will be a bit of dilution but it will get the job done.
I take it since you had gone to the trouble of dropping the pan and hopefully not spiling the oil all over the driveway LOL, you are going to be replacing the transmission filter as
well??

No, I did'nt remove the pan just the drain plug, funny that the
Gregory's manual never mentioned draining the torque converter.
BTW I did disconnect the top cooler hose and did start the engine momentarely but no oil came out!

Oh a Drain plug on an Auto!! WOW I have never seen one of those before, lucky you
“I did disconnect the top cooler hose and did start the engine momentarely but no oil came out!”
Was this before or after you drained 4 Litres out of the pan? , If after that would be why, if not it takes a few seconds to get flowing, Sorry should of written a better explanation
Anyway you probably would have just drained the T/C by now
The
Gregory’s probably does not mention it as a full fluid change on an auto isn’t common, it’s normally just a Pan drop and filter change= 4 Litres and generally a mess from where you dropped the pan and the oil spilt everywhere LOL,
That’s also why when you ask for 12 litres of ATF the guy at the parts counter looks at you funny.
Cheers.

hi there,
working with nissan,12lts is an o/haul amount of oil to go into trans.depending on kms you should consider replacing the filter.some nissan dealers in (sa)has a trans flush machine which will flush out all your old oil including the torque convertor.make sure you are putting in the correct oil.

You really should drop the pan to change fluid, the screen should also be cleaned!
