On Patrol
Planning a trip to the
Cape York area and Her Indoors suggested we come back from
Cairns via the Sunlander Motorail to
Brisbane so as to have a break from driving.
Question: My Patrol and roof rack come in at 2085mm high. Max hight on train is 2100mm giving me 15mm to spare assuming nothing sticks up above the basket Ha Ha Ha. I will have to relocate anything above to inside the car somehow, is it all worth it???
Have any of you done this and if so your thoughts please.
I am aware that it will cost me around $300 over driving the same but I want to know any pitfalls or benefits in doing this?
Thanks in advance, On Patrol.

KISS principal is fine for 2-2.5 inches but i still have to have enough air in the tyres to move the car on and off the train. Some of my gear sits 4 inches above the rack, problem not solved, and still does not answer my question as to is it all worth it.

We were faced with a similar dilemma a few years back.
Adelaide to Alice, we opted to take the Ghan which had us arrive refreshed and earlier then we would have if we had driven.
Yes it cost more but was worth it. I'm a bit of a train buff anyway and from a train you get a different view of the world than you do from your car.
Not sure what the Sunlander is like but dining car food can be a bit of a lucky dip, often bar/bistro snacks can be a better deal if available.
Enjoy the ride!!
