Hi guys,
Just wanting to comfirm wether a rumour i heard is true...
1. Is the handbrake on an FJ40 a transmission lock or does it just activate rear drum brakes? (I found this very hard to believe)
2. How is the handbreak adjusted (someone said that you had to adjust saying in the gear box (since it was apparently a transmission lock)

Justin,
The earlier LandCruisers had the handbrake on the rear of the transmission tunnel. It just had two shoes and a drum, and wasn't very effective.
The handbrake on your 60series works on the rear drum brakes. It is self-adjusting, which means that it will automatically adjust up whenever you apply the brakes while reversing. They can occasionally malfunction and overtighten - usually when you're doing steep tracks. If you hear a sqealing from the rear brakes when they are not applied, then you probably have this problem, and need to get a pair of screwdrivers in the adjusting hole to back them off.
And of course they can be manually adjusted too.
Cheers
phil

Yes , it is on the back of the transmission.. It is effective as a
park brake by not being subject to the mud.dirt, dust etc as a "drum in disc", as most of the newer systems are, therefore giving a longer, trouble free service life. As long as both rear
wheels are in contact with the ground, it will hold the vehicle.
Adjustment is the same as a normal drum brake, ie, a knurled wheel turned thru a slot in the backing plate.

The
park brake shoes on our work 78s wont last the 2 weeks between
services. They are poorly designed and in my situation are not to be trusted
