G'day all,

I gota hand me down uniden 40 channel UHF for nothing bout 2 years ago, and it has worked reliably the whole time Ive had it. Its an old model, Im guessing bout 10years , and it suddenly decided to retire. All the function work, speaker works (I tested it) but no sound is getting passed through to it. Not that switched on regarding electronics so was wondering if anyone new where in Melbourne I could get it repaired?

I dont think it'd be much, a diode probably or something like that. Figure repairing it would be cheaper than a new unit.

Any help appreciated,

Max.

Cost me $100 for new finals in a my TX3800... worth it in my case, its worth $800....

my guess that you can buy a cheapy off ebay for that sorta money if your repair was similar which would probably be your best bet.

How did th efinals go on a TX 3800. It has a time out on th etransmit so it cannot overheat. Were you running it with a high SWR???

I have one of these and it performs great. Never had a problem.

Talking to the bloke, its not uncommon with them running on normal UHF (sounds like bovine), but I do plead guilty on the second charge ;)

I'll second G&C.

>I dont think it'd be much, a diode probably or something like that.

I _love_ the way people make those sort of wild assumptions :)

It's not unusual to cost technician level labour at $70 per hour. Given the guy will not be familiar with your radio and probably won't have circuit diagrams it would not be _at all_ unreasonable for it to take him two hours or more to find the fault which may only be a 10c component.

A quick thing to check, on one of the older Uniden radios, the UH-001... there is a switch on the front panel called Tone Sq.
Make sure that it isn't pressed in as this will stop audio from getting to the speaker.
I lost count of how many UH-001's I have "repaired" by pressing this button and then telling the owner about it.....

Try Peter James at Lara.

Lara Electronics or Lara Communications I think he's called.
