Can't go wrong with a good quality 15w/40.
Get the latest generation ie:- SL Grade.
Oils are graded in the letters of the alphabet such as SF, SG, SH, SJ and the current one is SL for mineral grade oils.
You can get SM but that is starting to get into synthetic and semi synthetic.

Better off going with an oil that has high 'C' rating. S= spark ignition ie petrol. C= compression ignition ie diesel

Sarg is right anything "C" is suited more to the diesel (soot protection etc) - check your owners manual

I use C-I, but mine snot a 4.2

You are both correct.
Most oils are rated for petrol or light diesels.
They say SL - CI4 rated.

How about this...do a google and get onto the manufacturers websites. All the quality oil makers have lub guides on the internet. Just pick your quality preference oil maker and then the guide would give you the proper oil recommendation for all components.

This eliminates the 'some mates, mates uses blah, blah oil.

Why is my engine stuffed is usually a appropriate response.

Cheers.

Nissan recommend 3000ppm calcium in the oil.
'Calcium based detergents keep the engine clean particularly around the ring glands.... are also very thermally stable and as a side benefit ...a strong bearing passifying ability'.
Perhaps, being an old technology engine, the TD42 produces more carbon soot than the newer engines. The Calcium helps both clean the carbon from the surfaces, and hold it in suspension.
Here are a few oils that meet Nissans spec :
Caltex CXJ; Penrite HPR Diesel 15 (Semi Synthetic); Shell Rimula-X; Castrol J-Max;

Check out the Nissan Patrol Forums for more info......Regards....Keith
