Hi Everyone,

Looking for some advice on what is the best generator at the moment. Have been looking at the Honda and the Engel. Either the 10i or 20i. Basically running fridges, TV, and occassionally the hair dryer for the better half to keep her having fun. If you have any thoughts would love to hear them. Also looking for where I can get the best price, which dealer is the best to speak with.

Cheers

Matt

This may help you decide the size you want.

This gives some more detailed info on how much power particular appliances need.

Best generator ?? answer = solar panel ,,last 4 trips we have not been "allowed" to use the generator ,, as for the hair dryer to keep swmbo happy and having fun 12v models are available or run the 240v job thru an inverter ,,, lol

Couldn't agree more re solar panels. Generators are causing more and more fights between travellers out there. We are fully kitted out with solar panels, Engel fridge and 12volt bush light and never go without anything

Yeh great if your camped in nth oz, would be great boat anchor here at the moment, havent seen sun for a week, in fact rained for 4 days so camping would be fun !!!!
Genny would be only answer next to camping in C/P.
Its not the gennies that are the problem, its the operators!
Go the gennies used with respect, and when they make solar panels that are not so bulky and breakable then I might look at one.

meandet ,have not had a "fight" as such over our generator ,just that more and more places that we tend to visit are banning their use so we only carry our genny as a "backup" for our solar ,, just about all nat parks in Qld are now a genny no go zones , every council c/van park we have ever been to also bans gennys ,some of the rules imposed just dont make any sense any more ,ban the genny but alright to have the vehicle on fast idle for an hr or 2 making twice the noise while recharging the batts and using the glind or twine shower.

What do you think about using a Christie battery charger as an alternative to gennies when solar panels are not operative? It seems that most travellers are kitted out for 12 volts and as such charging batteries is the problem. The Christie would only need to run for a couple of hours to charge the battery and this could be done in the middle of the day to avoid annoying anyone. We haven't run out of battery power yet but we seem to travel far enough north during the dry to have plenty of sun to operate our 2 x 40 watt solar panels. We had no problem during 4 weeks at Cape Leveque last year. I did consider a Honda Eu10i at one stage but would now lean towards a Christie if I thought I needed one. So far so good.

We have seen a number of disputes though, including 2 women at Gibb River, again, 2 women at Kennedy Ranges and a number of inconsiderate users that I have had a word to.

meandet , I personaly think that the christies is a magic generator , problem is it is also one of the noisiest ,and for the price not having a 240v option limits its use somewhat ,as backup for our solar : 1x64 unisolar + 1x120 kyocera panel thru steca regulator into 3x 80amp Fullriver AGM HGL on c/t and 3x same batts under bonnet ,2x as aux +1x as starter we use an 950w two stroke Scorpion gen. cost round $200 a cple of yrs ago , when too cloudy or raining and in a place that has a policy of no gennys , I just idle the cruiser to charge up ,have yet to see that "banned " anywhere .

Off course Honda stuff is brilliant however the Kipor generators are worth looking at to if the budget is tight. They are just as quiet and have the same features. Lot cheaper.

But they don't perform as well when asked for a bit more grunt. As has been said in another thread - make sure that the generator will do what you want it to before you hand over the cash.

Stephen.
