G'day my name is Alex and have just joined this great site. I have a '92 4 Runner in mint condition with the 2.8 diesel motor. As an everyday vehicle in
Melbourne its just OK but on weekends when I want to tow the Jayco Eagle shes not OK. We are thinking seriously about doing "the trip" but I am worried about the lack of power. It pulls ok when she has had time to build up to it and as I'm not a rev head I could get away with it. My concern is the safety factor for overtaking etc. I'm sure there must be others out there who have a similar vehicle and could tell me the pros and cons about turbo installations. Any info would be great and much appreciated.
Cheers

Aj....
You cant perform miracles on that vehicle by adding a turbo. Sure it will improve overall performance but towing anything heavy behind it will still be a stressful thing to do. Overtaking will still be a problem even after the turbo is added.
Dont get me wrong, i got nothing against 4 runners or any other vehicle out there, but if you want to tow that Jayco safely then personally i'd be looking at a different type of vehicle to do the job.
I know how you feel as far as towing stress goes. My GQ had to tow a 2.5 tonne Hanes Signiture series boat once and it was a struggle up hills. It performed better than i expected but she would run out of puff and down gearing was required and with that was a huge reduction of speed. Now normally that wouldnt worry me but as the traffic built up behind me, that is something i hated. I knew i was slowing everyone down to the point where frustration sets in with some and they start to try overtaking in dangerous situations.

Ange,
Thanks for your input. Although the van comes in at under a tonne I still think that it will strain her too much. I don't want to be caught out and damage what is otherwise not a bad little truck.
Cheers

G'day Alex,
A mate of my had a 92 Hilux with same motor as you & even a Jayco Eagle. 3 years ago he was right where you are now with the addition of some over heating issues as
well. He found a 2nd hand dynamic turbo for the hilux & when correctly fitted & tuned made a dramatic increase to the vehicles drivability whilst NOT towing the Eagle. With the addition of the van he had > Fuel consumtion (compared pre-turbo) &> heating issues ++. Dispite fitting a large 12v thermo fan, taking D/lights off, adding extra vicous coupling fluid, new radiator etc,etc......
He sold the might lux for a 60 series turbo
Cheers

I appreciate your
views. It seems to be a common thought. Maybe I will look for a good 60/80 series cruiser.
Thanks again
Alex

I had an 84 model Hilux, and picked up a complete turbo from wreckers for 500 then fitted a straight thru exhasut for another 100 odd, all up less than 700 and fitted myself so was
well worth it. It made absolutely no difference to my fuel economy and still returned a solid 10 km per litre, If I had to spend a couple or few thousand however I would not have been so enthusiastic.
