Found this reference on the SMH/Fairfax site - is this the only caravan park in Pinnaroo? Reason I'm asking is I am looking for somewhere to safely store 3 off road campers while we drive the Border Track later this year. Head that the BT is not suitable for CTs from both track preservation and common sense perspectives. We are planning to take a couple of days to do the BT from N (near Pinnaroo) to Bordertown in the S. Happy to listen to other views but thinking it makes good sense to tent it through the BT. So (1) What do you guys think and (2) Any advice on CPS or other storage in Pinnaroo would be appreciated.

Thanks
Pete

I would ring the ph no. that u ring to find out the track conditions i beleive it is in Pinnaroo they may know of a lock up facillity? The CP is right on the edge of the road through the town as far as the security of the park only the owner or manager would beable to answer that.

Thanks Mattie I will do that - was sort of hoping that someone had done this before me and had first hand experience they might be able to pass on.
Thanks again

Pete, that is the only C/P in Pinnaroo and is not overly patronised. Not sure of other storage options in the area but I'm sure someone will safely store them for you. Try the local copper on 85778077 and ask if he has any suggestions. He drives a Patrol for private use and may be sympathetic LOL Fortunately for work he does drive a cruiser LOL.

Thanks Des - my group at this stage is 3 x GU Patrol diesels, 2 x Disco V8, 1xDefender diesel. None of the cruiser owners in the club want to chance it :-), but seriously thanks for the tip.
Cheers

No John, the Trol is only used as a shopping trolley. For real work, he uses the cruiser LOL

Has it got worse? Last i heard the BT could be negotiated in a ford laser.

G'day,

I have been down the Border track 3 times this year (taking different parties for a look). I definitely wouldn't want to try taking a trailer through. From Pinnaroo you could comfortably do it in a day trip returning via the bitumen to Pinnaroo.

I leave Adelaide after work on a Friday night, have a counter meal at Tailem Bend, fuel up at Pinnaroo at about 9.30pm and head down the track to the 1st campsite at the Pines. It is quite a different experience in the dark! Break camp say 9ish and by about lunch time you are through the track. Its about 120 k's from Pinnaroo till you hit the dirt road. I air up there and take the road to the right that goes to Kieth and get back to Adelaide about 5pm. A convoy would probably take a bit longer as you would spend time getting each of you over the dunes etc and the inevitable photo opportunities but it would be quite feasible, particularly if you get a reasonably early start.

The road I take to Kieth crosses the Pinnaroo-Bordertown bitumen road so all you would need to do is turn right there and head back to Pinnaroo for the night.

There are 4 decent dunes on the track that I have needed to have a couple of goes at sometimes to get over in the Patrol (depends on how dry they are) and it would be a nightmare reversing back down with a trailer. They are actually closing off a lot of the chicken tracks in an attempt to regenerate.

It is also quite close and tight in places (expect scratches) and the bottom section has some badly cut up and muddy sections. The bog holes can largely be detoured around but there are 2 spots where you will "change the colour of your truck" if there has been any rain.

Hope that helps

Trevor

Thanks Trevor - I was wondering if you could have a look at a couple of oziexplorer plots for me to make sure that I've got the right tracks off my 1:50k maps. If you could email me at peteandlyn22(at)bigpond(dot)com I will send you a couple of screen shots and you could tell me if I'm on the right track or not. We will be coming up from the SW after having spent 4 or 5 days in the Coorong area and would be thinking of coming in from Pinnaroo somwhere and camping a couple of nights along the way - say at The Pines on the first night and then Red Bluff the second. I had also thought that perhaps we could leave the trailers at the Bordertown CP.

Thanks in advance
Pete

Have you looked at any of the nearby towns? It seems there's a town every 15 minutes, driving along the highway...

The caravan park at Murrayville (30km further) isn't locked up, but is at least off the main road. Perhaps there's another option on the Adelaide side?

Thanks Ellmcg - yeah just trying to work out where the best spot would be. Given that we will be coming up from the Coorong was thinking we could leave the trailers at Bordertown and pick them up as we exit the BT.
Cheers
