Hi all

I've decided to completely strip my Warn 8274 hi-mount. There are articles I've found out there with useful tips, but the authors don't respond when I try and ask a question of them. Primarily the bloke who wrote the article at: www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billavista/8274/

So, I've got it all apart down to the split gearbox case halves. I have the drum off, but am struggling with the brake disk (on the left in the photo). The circlip was a bugger, but once that's off, the disk assembly (3 pieces) os meant to literally "spring" off the shaft and let loose a bunch of ball bearings. Well - I can't budge it.

I've resigned myself that I'll have to get to wherever I can find a puller large enough. Meanwhile, it looks like I can dissassemble the primary (lower) case and remove the gear sets. The drum drive gear at the bottom (and in the next photo at the bottom) is now loose after removing the drum. I'm wondering if anyone has taken one of these apart before, and managed to somehow slide the drake disk assembly, and the shaft that it's on, out to the left through the LHS housing and bearing set - and out through the large gear on the left in the photo. Can this shaft come out that way at all? I don't want to damage anything by appying an inordinate amount of force. Any help would be mucho appreciated!

Cheers
Chris

Chris,

There was a good article in 4x4 Monthly about 2 years ago.

I'll have it at home somewhere if you need it. The gurus of these things are SG Leslie, an engineering firm in West Heidelberg in Melbourne. If you aren't in Melbourne they'll still talk to you over the phone, and if it turns out it's beyond your capabilities they'll accept your half done rebuild and complete it - at least they offered that if I couldn't do it I could courier it to them in bits and they'd sort it.

Best of luck.

Dave

Dunno if this will work to load your pic.

Thanks Dave - that's good to know :)

My main aim is to make sure that all the corrosion is gone, the internals are in good nick, and the outside is refurbished. Mechanically it's fairly logical, but - as for most things, if you can't see the hidden catches, then the first time you take something apart it can be tricky.

Hi; There are a number of articles on the web.

The brake assy will probably be rusted on; liberal application of WD-40 or similar will assist with this.

If you are going to use a puller make sure the force is applied as close to the shaft as possible as the two outer disks appear to only be cast alloy.

I pulled my warn himount apart but mine looks like the newer model . My brake disc came apart easily . Not hard to put back together . Everything looked ok so i put the brake assembly back together . In the end all i was able to do myself was flush all the old gearbox oil out and replace with a litre of oil additive . (carnt remember the name of the additive but i was told what sort of oil to use by a firm that deals with competition 4wds (i can find it in the shed if you really want to know the brand) . I didnt think i needed this www.bbmotorsports.com.au/prod2265.htm
I hand sandpaped any surface rust off the gears and lower drum spline etc . Then i put everything together . Sprayed the chit out of the armature and casing with RP7 and every week or so i attach the hand controller and wind the cable in and out the length of the controller cable about 10 times . Works fine .

I recently serviced my low mount winch, I had a question and I contacted warn, a guy named Steven from Warn answered all my questions in a series of emails, he was very good, he also provided some alternative answers to my questions and links, part numbers, tips etc etc

Go to www.warn.com then to contact us, fill up your details and they send you an email.

You have to wait till the next day due to the different time zone for an answer..

Thanks everyone :)

I think that I have it apart now. What a beast when it's corroded. Nothing damaged, which is nice!

Now - a complete re-furbishment!
