Hi all my neighbour has a 92 mitsi GLS V6 3.0L manual, problem is it has developed a
water leak today (coolant) and is runniung from the back of the motor and down onto the gear box bell housing, we think where it is leaking from is at the back of the motor there is a heater hose that connects to a metal pipe which from what we can see (virtually impossible) runs back into the block we are assuming as we cant see it properly, does or has any body had this problem before, if so what was the requirement to get it fixed. By the look of it to me it will require the gear box to be removed and fixed that way,as you can only just get your fingers down in behind the motor, We can see the welsh plugs on the back of the heads and there is definately no leaks there so its coming from that pipe as mentioned above, any help would be appreciated. Regards Steve M

on that motor there is a pipe that runs from the
water pump up the front of the motor to the back.
they have a problem of coroding if the cooling system hasnt been looked after.
its not an easy job to do as the plenum chamber/inlet monifold ect has to be removed to get to the pipe at the
water pump.
your neighbour is probably looking around 3-4 hrs labour plus the pipe and a few gaskets.
pipe is still available from mitsubishi.
cheers

Forgot to mention, that we did look at the pipe you are talking about but this one seems to run from the end of the heater hose then connects to the metal pipe then directly into the back of the block and from what I can see is held on by a bracket that is welded to the pipe and goes directly into the block, the pipe looks as thou it would be about 6 inches long with a 90 degree bend in it, this one doesnt run back to the front of the motor/waterpump. Exactly the same problem on the
Heritage Listed Paj about two years ago and it was the
water pump.. About $1,400 to fix. All the top manifolds have to come off. If it is only the pipe it is worth replacing the
water pump at the same time - most of the cost was labour, the parts were only about $300.

Hi there Pete, have had another look this morning and for the life of me & my neighbour cant see where the pipe runs, as said above it runs from the
water pump through a pipe back towards the fire wall and connects up to the heater hose, surely they dont run this pipe under the inlet manifold or do they??? He is taking it to the mechanic in about 15 mins so they can fix it, I will let him know that you would suggest to get the
water pump done at the same time to save costs in the future having to strip it down again, would be interested to see how this pipe work is set up.Does it run under the inlet manifold, I pressume that is what you are saying. ? Regards Steve M

I think it does - another brilliant piece of engineering from 3 Diamond Motors. My Paj is the 91 NG but the engine is the same as the 92 3.0 V6.
If they have to lift the manifolds it is worth getting the
water pump done as it is under there too and at 250K + kms it can't have much life left.
The mechanic should have a good idea about this.

Stephen, if it is any use I had the exact same leak showing up and thought it was comming out of the bell housing but turned out was a lose heater hose clamp and the
water was ending up at the bottom of the bell housing. Because it only did it when the car was running and by the time I kept checking it the heat had evaporated all signs on the outside of the motor, gearbox ect so thought it was comming from inside. Try taking it for a drive then stop and feel around the heater hoses joins for moisture. I have a 94 Triton TD but same problem.
