Hi Has anyone done Gibb R Rd very recently - would appreciate feedback on general condition - I did Boulia to Stuart Hwy on Donaghue Hwy/Plenty Way approx 2 wks ago - had a bit of everything - didn't do any tyres but others did. If anyone has done both a comparison would be helpful.

We were on the Plenty & Donohue a couple of weeks back too, as you said a bit of everything but ok if you took your time, never ceases to amaze me the number of people (usually tourists by the vehicles with accessories all over them and the big wheels) who won't slow down for oncoming vehicles but scream past at whatever speed they travel at showering rocks and dust in all directions.
Woman at work (with NO 4wd experience) just came back from driving a hire troopy camper down the GRR from Kununnurra to Broome and said it was pretty good so probably better than the Plenty/Donohue

Harryn,
We did it from Derby to K in late May/early June. Generally it was better than the Donaghue.
The worst section was between the Durack R and Pentecost R due to roadworks and the fact that a lot of gibbers had been thrown into the wheel tracks. Some of them were football size. But, if you drive accordingly and don't have a heavy right foot there's no problem.
Our biggest drama was hired (generally) 4WDs not slowing down as they approached from the opposite direction.

Whilst Im not defending anyone....I did the GRR in a hired 4WD vehicle last year (after completing 2 prof. courses first so I knew the do's and don'ts) and I was amazed at the number of NON hired vehicles who didn't have a clue!

I always slowed down and pulled off to the side - but I found most other vehicles took this as an invitation to keep steaming ahead at full speed since I had gotten out of their way.

Sure there are some idiots in hired vehicles who have never driven a 4WD before (and probably shouldnt be) - and then there are others such as me who hire, and do the right thing and get training first. All I'm saying is don't label all 'hirers' as bad :P

Cheers!
