I have a 2001 Patrol 3lt diesel, when idling I have noticed that the dash lights have a slight flicker. Also when the tail and head lamps are on they also have a very slight flicker. As you accelerate the flickering goes away. The car starts first go and has a duel battery system. Has anyone got any suggestions. Could it be the alternator on the way out or a bad earth. It has been doing it for a while and does not appear to be getting any worse.

Hi David,
I would check your alternator brushes, but it could also be a poor connection somewhere.

Hi David, I Have a 2000 Model GU 3lt, it does exactly the same thing, Been doing it for 2 years now and had no ill effects on the vehicle, so not getting too worried about it.
Cheers Rossco.

short answer:
nissan fixed by replacing alternator regulator and bearings (not alternator) under warranty.
long answer:
i've got the same model (2003, 3L, dual batts) and it did something similar - dash lights would flicker when on the throttle. never noticed it at idle. flicker was only noticable in the dark bacause
bright daylight masked the effect.
first time nissan couldn't find the prob. went home, waited after dark and set up a video cam pointed at the instrument cluster. video clearly shows the flicker. went back to nissan with tape in hand. they made the fix - after trying to blame it on the extra load of the aux batt.
note that the charging system always showed plenty of volts on the multimeter (13.8v). i suspect the alternator dropped the volts only intermitently in which case a multimeter wont be fast enough to see the dips. you need an oscilloscope for that job.
