GPS Made Easy: Mapsend Lite V2
Posted on 10:59 AM 17th Monday, July 2006
With MapSend Lite V2 you can view your Magellan certified preloaded SD card maps on the big screen of your PC!
MapSend Lite V2, enables you to view maps preloaded on SD cards on the PC, plan your route before your journey, replay your track history downloaded from the GPS, plot your position in real time and view your map in either latitude/longitude or UTM coordinates.
Visualise and create your waypoints and routes more easily on the PC, using the Topo map or marine chart as a background, before downloading them to your Magellan GPS, or upload your waypoints and routes that you have mapped on your GPS to view them on your PC.
With MapSend Lite V2 you can upload
track logs from your Magellan GPS to your PC and view them in 2D or 3D (DiscoverAus Streets & Tracks Topo only).
MapSend Lite V2’s Geocache control centre allows you to download cache files form the net as
well as create, search and sort before heading out to find that elusive cache.

Had a quick play - uses installed mapsend products as layers - so if you have DiscoverAus, Great Desert Tracks and the old Mapsend WA (for example) you can switch between them all (you can not have more than one on at a time). You can also load an (explorist) basemap as a background. It has file manager for exchanging files (waypoints etc) to/from GPS (meridian or explorist) but you can not "cut" maps and upload - you still need to use the proper DAST program for that (or buy the Topo SD card).
Cheers

Is this the thing that takes the place of the CD that Topo SD card users were promised by Next? I've been hanging off buying an Explorist XL for this reason, as I'd like to see what it's like,

Yes - it sources the map background from your SD card (or basemap on GPS) and has all the other functions of the "old" DiscoverAus CD ie waypoint/waypoint route/track upload download and the log (moving map) function. The only thing you cant do is make a map for upoad to gps (you theoretically have them all anyway)

Greg,
Do you see any benefit of using MapSend Lite if you just have DAST V1?

Hello - If you have and explorist it certainly is useful. To use waypoints/tracks in DAST you (up untill now) needed to go through a bit of a process converting file formats as DAST was created for Meridian (and older) units (which use a different file format). It also has the geocache manger built in so if you are into geocaching may be handy as
well (you can import loc/gpx files which are standard format for this caper). You can also change the coordinate system to UTM which you cant do in DAST....there are probably a few other things Ive missed. Anyway its free so you will lose nothing but time if you try it for yourself (though you do have to provide Magellan with your details prior to download - I just made
mine up:)
Cheers
