MTR, best tyre I've ever had, held up to every type of terrain I've thrown at it (and heaps of suburb bashing too).

I just went though this with buyig a set for my Terrano. All said and done, I ended up with the MTR's. I was abit worried about thier performance in the sand, but as far I can tell they performed very well. The are also and awesome tyre for out in the bush. Loads of traction.

They are both good strong tyres.
My 265/75R16 MTRs did 45,000k and still had 8mm tread left - mostly desert trips. No punctures but had a sidewall delaminate after some rough treatment - Goodyear replaced them under warranty.
I replaced them with silent armours. They are not as aggressive, but just did 5000k on the Hay River and Madigan Line and they were a bit better in sand than the MTRs. And between two vehicles, we got one puncture. There was no chipping, and no measurable wear so far.

IMO - just go for the one that looks the best. If you want an aggressive looking tyre, go for the MTR. If you want a less aggressive tyre, go the Silent Armour. If you plan on mud, go the MTRs.

Cheers
Phil

MTRs would be the pick. The only side note if you are planning to do any outback
trips I would recommend to fit tyre sonsors (even cheap ebay ones will do).

On the recent trip one car stuffed one MTR on the way to the desert and
one stuffed one MTR on the way back. The main reason is that when the tyre
gets flat you don't notice it untill its too late and tyre becomes the throwout...

Hi Phil,

STT was stuffed as well, but if you compare stuffed MTR which only had bulged
sidewalls without any cracks and stuffed STT was completely disintegrated.

I'll see if I can uploaded stufed STT photo on here :)

Going through the same exercise at the moment and am leaning towards Mickey Thompson Baja Claws Radials or the MTX. The MTX looks like the best standard mud tyre on the market for the price and being able to handle mud better than rocks. Had a price of $260 each for the MTX or the claw radial in 31/10.5r16

Its a hard to call MTR's stronger than MTZ etc both have the same sidewall plys. The MTR was designed as an offroad tyre mainly for rocks. The MTZ looks more suited to mud than the MTR, bigger lugs and tread pattern. Mickey Thompson already has rock tyres (Baja Claws etc) and designed this more as a offroad mud tyre.

but there are differences in Ply's... thickness, how many, what they are made of etc.

In theory they should be the same strength, in practice they are not....
We just recently got from the Outback Trip and the result was:

1 car with Cooper STTs - 3 punctures, 1 destroyed tyre
1 car with Mickey Thomson MTZs - 2 punctures, 1 through sidewall and 1 through
the whole tread block!
7 car with GoodYear MTRs - 2 punctures in total for all cars...

The Goodyear is a strong tyre nothing wrong there, but its designed for rocks and after reading heaps of reviews etc from the states most indicate there are better tyres out there for mud and snow.

Its hard to rate a tyre on punctures, I've had plenty and quite a few would have punctured any tyre or brand.

Good site for reviews is www.jeepreviews.com , you can make what you want from reviews but it can give some idea
