We're thinking of downgrading(?) from a poptop to tent-trailer of the Camp-let or Cub Supermatic, mainly for style for ease of towing and access to out-of-the-way places. Not so much as 'serious' 4WDing. Would love to hear from anyone here who own or have first-hand knowledge of either of these makes. Some queries are: ease of erecting; packing up; living comfort; how strongly built etc. We plan on going to the Caboolture Caravan & Camping Show on this coming weekend, & need a bit of back up! Thanx in advance for all honest opinions, good and bad.

Seriously, I love the camper. Ours is a hard floor that is 12 years old but built so well that it is still in excellent condition despite extensive touring by the previous owner (original owner). I know for a fact it has been around Oz as well as the Simpson Desert, Cape York and the Kimberleys.

As to easy of operation, well you couldnt get simpler. One person can open it in 30 seconds and it is possible for one person to close it up in about 3 minutes.

It doesnt have as much storage space as the newer campers, but it is suprising how much you can actually store in it. We have a slideout kitchen as most of the newer hard floors do and it is very functional. The sleeping is a queen size bed with inner spring mattress and the hard floor area inside is more than ample for packing clothes and getting changed. We have even set up our table and cahirs inside so we could actually eat our meal instead of the flies eating it and in inclement weather we have an annexe to increase the living area when staying for extended periods. Naturally, the more you set up, the longer it takes to pack up.

It tows well and our vehicle really doesnt know it is there.

There are many varieties of hard floor around and I guess it is just a case of deciding what features you want and looking at the shows to see what brand has the best to offer you. Set a budget and dont go over it.

Probably might be an idea to hire a few and see how they work for you and dont overlook the used market, there are plenty out there, but whatever you choose, good luck and enjoy.

If we werent going to dissappear for an unlimited time around Oz we would keep the camper, but feel we need more comfort for an extended trip.

Would I buy another one if the need arose...........Yes I would.

I have a cub camper and love it.At the time I bought it, I wasn't sure if we had done the right thing. Our kitchen is inside (little 2burner stove sink and frig) it proved it worth being inside.Help's heat the inside up on cold mornings. We have a pull out barby outside.Best of all set up time is 5min or less.Unwind the winch and wind it up, so easy, my daughter could do it when she was only 8 years old.I did try other hard floor campers but this was the easiest to set up.Hope this helps.

Thanx Cruiser for the info. I gather you had a CUB? Which model? Oboviously it was an off -roader; factory built or fitted with the Transcontinental pak?
It is because of the ease of set-up/pack-up, that has us tossing-up between the hard floor Cub and Camp-let Savanna ( www.campletaus.com.au/ ) with the free-standing tent assembly. Take a peek! It's really cool!
This one also boasts both (2) sleeping areas as being 'insulated on all six sides'. For just the two of us, if possile, I would adapt the 'lid' b/room to living/dining area.
Not fussed about a s/s kitchen, and prefer washup basin to sink. Also we already have a hardly used 2-burner gas cooker and a 30year old Engel...but then the Cub comes with fridge! Oh dear, I feel a headache coming on!
Of course, we haven't ruled out 'used' models but can't search seriously till we sell our Jayco Poptop. Just looking at all options before getting too serious.
Will see what the SSCoast Show brings...

Sorry if I gave the impression that it is a Cub. it is actually a Camp O Matic, and I y still have it and currently have it advertised, but feel that regardless of brand, they are all pretty much the same in the way they operate and because of that line of thought, I was simply commenting on our experience with the camper.

Good luck and I am sure you will find something to suit your needs.

Thanx Scoof, helps heaps. If we choose the Cub planned to omit the inner kitcken, as we have a 2-burner cooker (that won't be bolted down).
Will definately want a hard floor (or trailer top).
Mmmn, choice is getting hard already & we haven't seen them first hand yet!
