They would be the one of the most used new 4wds for outback touring. So many happy users can't be wrong. They are tough and reliable in their 4.2 diesel range. They have a virtually unbreakable driveline. They have some shortcomings and some engines that are having problems that seems to be compounded by reports of poor after sale service.

Take the 3 litre diesel for example, Toyota wouldn't ever use an engine like this in their big landcruiser range. and if one of their engines had these sort of problems they would soon stop putting it in their cars.

The truth? Did i state any false facts? The truth is not always black and white hz75, there is grey. Good and bad points with everything. You need to weigh up those and decide from there.

ARE THEY A BAD MODEL?????????? A GU with a 3 litre is different than a GU with a 4.2.

Are they a bad model??????????? NO.
And that is the simple answer.
The longer answer has allready been written.
"02" GU Patrol 3.0TDI, 128,000 km, and only regular servicing.
And yes, it used for what it was built for.

Meow,,,,ffffft.

"ARE THEY A BAD MODEL.NO!
THEN WHY ARE THERE SO MANY POSTS ABOUT THEM ON THIS FORUM??????????"

Short answer is, this is a forum of people who use their trucks for their intend design and as such vehicle choice is numbered heavily in favour of the Patrols and therefore more likelyhood of reported incidences being reported on here.

If you want me to start on the short comings of my 100series give me your email addy as I don't want to clog up the system here with all the days off the road with that vehicle. Only thing in that vehicles favour was the terrific warranty but so it should be with an extra 15-20 grand purchase price.

My line is now out and set for the big one. hahaha.

All in fun Trevor.

Have to disagree with this statement...at least until I see hard evidence to the contrary.

Off-track,

I know it only accounts for a portion of the posters on this forum but the Members tab at the top of the screen has a drop down list which includes members rigs. Have a look here, lots of rigs...so many Patrols. I went looking for the proportion of vehicle types but could not find it. Maybe an EO staffer would be able to set the records straight??? as to how many of each vehicle type the members have???

As I hinted "all in fun",
Trevor.

no there not a bad model.
the reason there are so many posts about them is the fact that theres sooooo many about so if there is a problem others can find out.
are toyota equivelant better no way.
the reason theres not so much about the problems toyota have its more to do with the fact once people realise they made the wrong choice in bying one is that when something does go wrong they havnt got the balls to come foward and say theres a problem with my toyota i knew i should have got the nissan.
cheers.
ps i dont own either its just a well know proven fact.

Every time you see a post about a 3 litre Nissan, the same would have been the case in the early 90's, but replaced with "1HDT"

In fact, they still have problems with the bottom end, just no-one willing to post about the cost of the fix!

That is just so much total rubbish! I work in the motor trade as a 4wd mechanic and and 1hdt bottom end failures are not an issue.

The question should have read....

Are Lada Niva's as bad as everyone keeps telling me?

Oh, you don't remember all those pieces of crap driving around in the 90's then?

Nissan GU....great car. Just don't include 2000 to early 2003 3.0 TDi

Is there a problem with the engine in the 2005 and 2006 model?

GU's are like people, there are some good and some bad.

Biggest majority of GU's are good.

Some people are bad, like the ones who frequent forums just to stir the poo.

Even though I own one I can't say I'm a Patrol Nazi...

Actually wanted a 100 series but the extra 25k would have got me divorced...

All this Patrol v Cruiser tripe is a bit of a yawn.

Ford v Holden
Collingwood v Carlton
League v AFL

Are they good, yes, would I buy another one, NO !!!, why ? when you buy a diesel engine with a track record like Nissan Or Toyota, regularly serviced it should do at least 500,000 ks when they start blowing at 120,000 and Nissan say we'll look at it but you'll have to pay half {8 grand out of your pocket over what you already paid} and thats an if {they might not} add to that 5 GRAND FOR A FUEL PUMP or 7 grand for a turbo plus Nissans attitude of "you bought it it's your prob"...............
need I say more ?

NO NAY, NEVER, AGAIN ......................

hz75, no other manuacturer has made a vehicle as tough this century. Toyota did last century but they don't make them like that any more. There may be some short comings, but they don't leave even trolls in the lurch..........

Short comings, engine failures, back doors cracking/splitting,wheels coming off, if those are examples of "short comings" mate I'll hang on to my old Toyo thank you, it might not get me there as fast as the GU but at least it will get me there...........

Dave, didn't I say "Toyota did last century but they don't make them like that any more" You are talking about your old one. Broken front suspensions, broken front diffs, gear box problems of the 100s this century.

I think 4.2TDI Nissans are as tough as the old 60 and 80 series and still being built. As for getting there as "not as quickly" I think the 100kph limit covers all of us Dave so get there the same time as long as yours keeps going.
