Have bought a TomTom1 and a broadband wireless card for the laptop (so we can get email etc).
Both say you can get an external antenna to boost the signal - but do I need an antenna for each or could 1 do the same job?

Hi Di

You should not need one for the Tom Tom coz it's sits on the dash and should have a good view of the sky from there. The connections for the 2 will probably be different anyway

They operate on different bands so require different antennas

An 'active' aerial will improve reception on the gps. They are small flat things with a magnetic base about 3 cm x 3 cm x 1 cm and usually have a lead about 3 metres long. I use mine in bush country and sit it out near the front of the bonnet and run the lead up the join between bonnet and mudguard and close the door on the lead. I could mount it permanant but can't be bothered. Prob. cost about $30 on ebay.

Which wirless card did you go for? I am shopping for one now and can;t decide between Maxon MiniMax and Sierra AirCard 580 both from Telstra and work on CDMAx1 network as well as high speed in city areas.

What do you advise?

I got a Maxon Mobile card from Telstra - it slots into a slot in the laptop - I'm no expert but so far it is working just fine.
