Generally the digital transmission range is similar to analogue. Analogue signals deteriorate near the edge of the range and in many cases you get poor pictures where you will get good ones on digital – however digital goes from perfect to nothing over a very short distance.
You will get reception in some case where you will not on analogue. Case in point – in
Port Augusta I can't get ABC which is radiated on CH-1. This is because I don't carry an antenna that receives bands 1&2 efficiently (very few of us do - Happy Wanderers included.) However I can get the UHF analogue stations as I carry a Phaselink antenna which is amongst the best we can easily carry. ABC digital is on UHF so I can get perfectly. There are other
places I have not been able to get the band 1&2 channels – roll on digital!!!

If you are in a digital broadcast area it will very likely improve your reception if you are having ghosting or interference problems. With signal strength issues it's a maybe.
On our boat we have plenty of
places around
Sydney Harbour where analogue TV reception is poor and at some
places non-existent. It used to drive me nuts. Now our digital reception is fantastic and it has the benefit of not changing when the boat swings (omni-directional antenna) which was always a problem with analogue, even in good reception areas. Also, some shows are high definition which is an added bonus. Spend a bit extra and get timeshifting and you can schedule to watch shows when you choose and fast forward through adverts.
For so long we were without SBS and ABC was dodgy, now we get everything just about everywhere on the Harbour.
Of course, if you are in an area where there's no digital broadcast it will be useless.

Hi Pooley,
I know absolutely nothing about set top boxes but have read a lot about them on the caravaners
forum as it is a regular topic, you should find a lot more info on them there and may also get lot's more replies if you post your question there.
