A tip for 3 litre owners the air filter comes out of the factory upside down, the filter has a solid rubber ring one end and a flexible rubber lip the other, the solid rubber ring should be at the top! if it's not dirt can get by the filter not good for air flow sensor or the engine!

The new Nissan Patrol diesel engine will be a 6cylinder, the new navara 2.5 litre engine with 2 more cylinders guaranteed!!

Now that'd put the wind up the 4.2 yota wouldn't it?

If we sort of extrapolate out from the 2.5, so 128 Kilowats plus 50%, hmmm, 192, say 180 allowing for some losses. 400 newton metres of torque, plus 50% , hmmm around 600. My god what a stump puller.

Better upgrade the gearbox again I reckon.

If you put the air filter in as you say, the soft rubber ring simply collapses, leaving a gap around the top.

The filter is designed so the soft rubber ring is at the top and stays in contact with the lid of the air filter box.

The solid rubber ring is designed to hold the filter up.

Before you open your mouth give Nissan Head office a ring and ask for the engine technician and ask him you, will find your Nissan dealer and your great mechanic are wrong! then you can apologise!

Right way or wrong way ,, simple solution is to test if you have a seal ,shove a plasic bag over the snorkel head and seal off ,if she keeps running you got a leak ,first place you look is "filter upside down'.

Not quite Alloy c/t. The engine will still suck air thru the snorkel whether the filter is in upside down or not.

Ok, so lets ask the question. Could anyone who has a 3.0 GU patrol tell us which way your filter is fitted. Soft rubber seal on top or hard rubber seal on top?

Mine is flexible rubber ring to the top.

And it will always be that way unless a technical person can give me a damn good reason otherwise........

Not an owner of said vehicle type but what Muzz stated sounds like the logical way to fit it. Not saying that it is necessarily correct but I would like to see some sort of proof before having my filter fitted with the flex ring at the bottom.

Hey Guys

I wouldn't get to worked over whatever is the right way.
It can be hard to get a straight and correct answer sometimes.

I discovered that in the petrol 4800 workshop manual that
the ignition timing was shown backwards such if you followed
instructions to advance it then you really retarded it.

It was a battle to get that right.

I like stats about cars to and in Nissan brochure it
had auto as being heavier than manual model - then in next
brochure , same model figures were reversed.

Fun to watch various magazines quote good points
about a car based on wrong data.

Never did figure out for sure that manual was heavier
than auto in 4800 patrols.

Robin Miller

P.S. So hope your right about new engine though.

Yes I appolagise AC/DC. I appolagize for giving you the credit that you could possibly be right therefore wasting my time in DRIVING to Magic Nissan in Mellville and asking the service manager what the correct fittment of the airfilter is. His response was "foam at bottom, rubber at top".

And just to give you more undeserved credit I phoned Nissan Australia and asked for some technical help about the airfilter fitment for the ZD30 to which the reply was "foam at bottom, rubber at top".

So yes I am sorry I have wasted my time and questioned my experience and better judgement, and you can go and have a good laugh while others go running around thinking they have buggered up their diesel engine.

Thanks for nothing!

Well this is what happens when you accelerate with the flexible lip at the top.
The filter is lifted from its seat at the bottom,as told to me by the head technician at Nissan head office, believe what you like! have a think about it,it's your handgrenade.

There is NO movement of the filter when the lid is clipped on... so, at the end of the day I don't think it matters which way round it is... but as in earlier post, sideways maybe an option for those undecided.
Cheers
