I have just purchased a 3000kg+ boat and would like to upgrade my suspension for towing. We have a 2002 Lancruiser Sahara. We don't go off road and dont really need the car lifted however I do sense the rear of the car struggles to take the weight. Any suggestion on best type and brand of suspension would be appreciated.

P.S. If you are interested in the boat - check out www.glacierbaycats.com.au

Hi there. We have a Toyota Cruiser 2002 Turbo Diesel and have had the ARB springs fitted and find it excellent. It doen't 'drop' the vehicle down nearly as much and after nearly 3 years of use towing a 21ft Evernew 2600Kg all up, is still as good as the day it was fitted.

Gotta agree ,except get the firestone coilrights from Trucksprings in the USA ,stronger, and 1/2 the price delivered to your door than polyairs even allowing for the $ to $ conversion rate and freight costs.

With Alloy c/t. Just got Firestone fitted. Should have done it when I got the 4by.
One side issue I don't keep hitting my head on the back canopy doors when open .

There is also an air bag that replaces the spring, so the height/weight is infinately adjustable hence u should also beable to retain a comfortable ride when unlaiden.

I read your post again and u wanted the best so it would be worth talking to the airbag man www.airbagman.com.au for the suspension mentioned above.

Thanks for the advice on airbags. Is it expensive to wire in a compressor which allows you to fill while on the go rather than stopping at service station to fill?
Also, anyone know anybody in Melbourne thyat you would recommend (and trust) to supply and install such a system?

Polyairs/Firestones usually run a separate air line to each bag, with a simple valve assembly put somewhere conveinient. Getting a air commpressor...ie ARB, TJM,,,,, will set you back around $400-$500 fitted, as a rough price. Then simply pump the airbags up when towing the boat, and let them down when you are finished.

Suspension kits are no good for towing - you need some kind of a car :) (Poor, I know :)

Best suspension would be bilsteins shocks with Lovell's or other springs. For towing
you'll need either heavy duty springs or polyair airbags or both.
I did my suspension and polyairs at atsgeelong.com.au even though I am in Melbourne. The guy there (Darren) is the guru on suspension for Cruisers (and others).

Hayman Reece Weight Distribution Hitch should be 1st on shopping list, then if you want-suspension. No suspension or amount of air bags will fix the problem towing that sort of weight. I have aftermarket suspension with extra leaves, air bellows and the thing that makes the difference is the WDH. I tow the sort of weights you're talking about and have for a while now and promise you the WDH is the only proper solution despite anything suspension salesmen tell you.

dfried,

If the boat is weighted correctly on the trailer you shouldn't have to change a thing - I had a 3.5T+ boat I towed on a stock V8 GXL, did it very easy and very safely.

However it did pull the car down the ramp backwards with all wheels locked up a few times - that was then I found out the ABS doesn't work in reverse!!!

wait to see how it fits then take it from there

Cheers
