I have been looking at
camp ovens for a while now (& reading the archives).
I have probably decided to buy the Aussie
Camp Oven from Southern Metal Spinners.
Site Link
Most of the time I will probably be using them with heat beads as described in this site. Site Link.
Anyone have one of these & can tell me what they think of them.
from Marty.

We have a
bedourie and couldnt be happier, the top doubles as a great fry pan and the overlap of the lip make keeping out coal much easier, now if I could only learn how to
cook gooder in it I would be rapt.
I saw a great thing at the outback last year, take the coals from the fire and make a bed of coals seperate from the foire and use the
camp oven there, worked great, JohnR and the delectable Adam were doing the same at hos place this year when we visited one nite.
All the best, great bit of kit but take care to treat it to stop it rusting.

Since "discovering" the art of
camp oven cooking last year, we have had some absolutely delicious meals cooked in ours!
Our club regularly has
camp oven cookouts, and we often get together with some friends for
camp oven dinners in their back yard..... and several times in the last month we have had delicious roasts
camp oven cooked under the hood of our BBQ!
Can't beat it!
Haven't a clue what brand it is..... but when we do
cook on a fire, we shovel a bed of coals outside the fire and then place the oven on the coals, and shovel coals onto the lid.
Works a treat!
Cheers
Brian

I can't quite decide which is the best piece of "apparatus" to
cook on.
I have both a
Camp Oven (the Hillbilly) and the Cobb Cooker.
Both do a superb job but the 12" Hillbilly fits more meat & vegies in and I can also fit the Muffin tins in the Hillbilly. Muffin's you say. Yep. Macca's Muffins. My speciality.
The
Camp Oven is also good for baking bread. Again the 12" diameter
Camp Oven will enable you to fit a bread baking tin inside.
When I'm cooking for a few I usually stoke up the both of them and
cook, say a leg of pork and most of the vegies in the
Camp Oven and a leg of lamb in the Cobb.
Just one last tip.
Buy the larger size
Camp Oven Marty. It will give you greater flexibility.

I use the medium size cast iron
camp oven inside the Cobb. Great for cooking those marinated roast beef and lamb that come vac packed. Also great for cooking stews, casseroles and curries. I am still amazed at cooking the food in the Cobb with only 5-7 heat beads, I was used the using 90 heat beads in the Weber!

We just use one of those cheap cast iron
camp ovens from the camping stores. We've been using it a few years now and it is pulled out everytime we go camping (pretty much all we
cook in). We do damper, stews, roasts, eggs just about anything you can think of. It's awsome, we
cook on gas in the summer and just either hang it over the fire or whack it on the coals to
cook. I've looked at the expensive ones and although I reckon they are probally more hardy etc mines done a HEAP of work over the years and if it cracked or whatever I'd be more than happy to spend another $25 and get another. I reckon it'd take me a long time to justify spending $100 plus dollers on one.

Marty,
I had a cast iron
camp oven for ages and it was a very good piece of equipment. I am now using a Hilllbilly
camp oven which has exceeded my expectations. I brought
mine with a gas conversion set up and have no dramas with cooking.
I use heat beads on the lid for my roasts and find that It provides perfect heat. The oven itself is very light, albeit the entire kit is a bit bulky, but overall it has been an excellent purchase.
Hope this helps..
Bunner.

I have a Hillbilly as
well, but with mixed results. I seems to do ok with roasts using heat beads but I purchased the gas burner (from hillbilly) for my oven and cannot get it to do my roasts. I mean 3 hours for a 1.6kg chicken and still not cooked seems a bit to long in the oven for me. I had to put it in the house oven for another 30 mins to finish cooking it.
With heat beads 2 hours same size bird and all veg done. I don't know if i'm doing something wrong but will keep trying. Any help would be welcomed as
well.
Sorry to steal the thread I can say with the hillbilly and heat beads work
well.
Brian
