Hi,
Just back from doing the
Madigan Line in a Prado 120 and looking for ideas on changing to a tray setup with usual general gear at tray level and adding a sleeping deck above to put an OZ tent on permanetly...in postion ready to just raise up...covered with a tarp for travel.
Advantages being,a light weight tent, quick action to open tent into postion, beding already in place AND you can stand up to dress, much lower than roof top tent.
Definately want an auto...but at this stage do not have information if/what autos are available in king cab, dual cab, single cab....would prefer king cab...brand/model flexable to suit.
Would apreciate some feed back, thanks in advance

Went along the same thought process as you.
Finished up at F250 auto super cab XLT tray with Utility camper slide on.
Overkill? maybe. Comfortable and servicable. Yes!!!

Troppo,
Agree comfortable, and not overkill by any means:-) but I feel a slide on utility camper in my case will be too much weight and limit future trips....hench the tent on top idea as compromise.
F250 had ovelooked that unit...
What motor/ fuel consumption do you get from F250.
I suspect that a king cab auto combo will not be available from Toyota or Nissan

F250s and GMCs look too big for the size of the
wheels on them. Need 20"

Joe
The F250 gets me about 15l/100 hwy but is still very tight. so would expect that to improve. The figures quoted here and elsehere are in the 14 range hwy. Soem report as low as 10 and 11
Which is surprisignly good for its size.
The key to this seems to be large engine 7.3 l doing the work easy.
The motor is built by International Navistar for trucks up to about 10 tonnes and is the largest volume produaction engine in its class. The yanks use them in trucks and in schoolbusses a lot. One article is saw said that were built for a duty cycle of 500,000
miles before major overhaul.
Down side is city driving where they can be abit cumbersome (although you get used to it quickly) and fuel economy goes to 20+. If you have the power it's hard not to use it.
Supply is getting tight for new vehicles and second hand values are astonishing.
Hope this helps
Chris

Thanks Troppo,
Interesting consumption figures.
The F series could be a challenge on Victorian High Country tracks, due to it's added size?.

I'm sure you would be able to order an auto box in the cruiser TD ute, as long as you are prepared to wait !
Rodeo 3.0 TDi has auto option.

Hi Joe,
Traytop
camping is a great way to go. We take tent and swag, so depending on where we are, we can use either. But 9 times out of 10 we just roll the swag out. The Oztent hooks up nicely to a traytop canopy, which is useful if it rains. Our tet is called a "Breezeway" which does the same sort of thing.
We
park the wagons in a circle, so everyone has privacy, but we rarely
camp in common
camp areas.
As I guess you know, you can't get an auto in either the 79series or the patrol, so I guess you're looking at a 4 cyl diesel or a V6. Main issues I've seen with them is limited wheel travel from the torsion bar front ends and I've seen both Rodeos and Hiluxes with bent chassis from overloaded rear ends out in
the desert.
cheers
phil

Joe, The breezeway tent is a local
Adelaide invention - by a small canvas company called Halls Canvas Goods. They fold into a smaller bundle than the Oztent, but take a few more minutes to put up. Oztent is pretty hard to beat for something that you can hang off a traytop canopy.
Cheers

Know you said above that you are not seriously looking at slide-on type campers however I have become a real fan of the Carry-Me camper that Judy and I have.
Easy as to set up the tent, plenty of room up there as long as you don't mind the ladder climb (good in croc country though!) and there is no limit to the customisation you can do inside the box in terms of Kithchen units and storage options etc.
Tent folds over to give good 8' x 7' covered and walled area beside the unit to
cook and live in with optional extensions beyond that.
I have the 120 Prado but tow one of these units mounted on a box trailer. Best of both worlds for having a base
camp and doing day trips. Not ideal for Desert trips though as not wanting to tow. BUT you can't have everything! Can always try to hire a tray top to do desrt work maybe and whak the camper in it.
Cheers
Muddy

Joe.
Wait a few weeks and you will see a new Triton that has the same inside space as a f250 but 9L/100k economy, auto and diff lock available. Eric.

Is that the one with a side profile that looks a bit like a European Wasp???? Saw one in a dealer yard as I drove past.... geez I thought the Prado was ugly when it came out but it looks pretty conservative against this thing!
Someone else described the front end as looking like a Star Wars Stormtrooper helmet!
Cheers

I had a look at the Triton at the
Cairns show last week.
Ugly is not really the word for it I just don't think a word has been coined yet.
