Hi Bill
Just been across the first few hundred km Jervious to Alice and it
was good mostly 100km, however various ruts on side of road indicated
how rain could turn it to slush easily.
Was a little dissappionted in lack of side trips.
We came up thru dessert to Alice via Batton
Hill 80km south of Jervious.
If you were looking for a 4wd side trip for a couple of days
you can
camp at primitive but nice
Batton Hill camp site
leave trailer and do day trip south to
Lake Caroline
and
places, very nice , lots camels and some opportunity
to drive in sandy parts of
Hay river bed.
Gotta book though even though usually no campers their.

We went across from
Boulia to Jervois and then down to Batton
hill about a month ago, plenty of bulldust but road wasn't too bad, if you drive to the conditions and slow down for oncoming vehicles you shouldn't have any dramas.

I suggest Taking the
Ross River Highway east from Alice to Altunga, then North through "The Garden" to join the Plenty near Mt. Riddoch. Check it on a map and you will find it. A fabulous drive that we have done many times. Really at its best going from north to south with late afternoon sun hitting the peaks, especially good if there has been some rain recently and the
wildflowers are on. But still v good going from south to north - just look out your back window every so often after you leave altunga. Also worth 30 minutes at the Altunga museum. Great
camping spot in the shelter of a big
red bluff at 23.08.085 N and 134.33.94 e
I'd recommend an easy day on the first day, leaving Alice around lunchtime, stopping at Altunga and
camping at
the bluff, then setting off after brekky the next day. This bit needs an off road trailer but you will manage it OK if it is a real off road with that extra bit of clearance.
The tourist centre in Alice can give you more info on this drive and up to date info on the roads.
