Hi all, Projecta claim their 33AH AGM battery can be re-charged in 4 -6 hours while your car is running from the cigi lighter socket.
This almost seems too good to be true.
I am hoping someone can help me here - wouldn't that destroy the little wires connected to the cigarette lighter?
I was thinking about getting either one of these (HP1500) or maybe their PS800P (17AH) model. The idea with the smaller one would be to have it fully charged before the trip and only ever use it to help start the car if needed (run the engel on a low setting for a day or so on starting batt). The bigger one could be used to run the Engel for a day or so while stopped - to save the starter - but I'm worried about their claim of it re-charging so quickly via a lowly cig plug.
I have one of the newer 32l 2.5A engels with an insulated cover, no other power usage when stopped.
Thanks, Steve

Makes the dual battery systems a bit pointless I think. I have a 700amp battery under the bonnet and run everthing off it , fridge / lights ect. I also have a 17AH jump starter pack to start the car if the main battery is flat, is always on charge in the back cig socket. The jump starter pack starts the car even with the original battery disconected. I have never had to use it yet ,the main battery powers the fridge all night and still starts the car next day. I have used the car like this two years now and no problems. I can see the need for two or more batteries if you are
camping and not using the car for a few days though.

Hi Desray
May I ask which brand your 17AH is, as I have had a cheap 17AH & a 24AH from super cheap and niether have been able to start a 4l petrol engine.
I'm thinking that the Projecta ones are better quality, but can't be sure

Hi Steve
I manufacture Power Packs and even my small unit with the 55 amp hour agm and the heavy duty charge cable direct from the battery will take 2 1/2 hours to recharge.
The lighter socket type will take a very long time indeed.
Regards Derek.

Hiya
My Prado has a little note on the ciggy lighter that says max load 120W. This means that it can supply a max load of 10 Amps at 12 Volts. Provided you have nothing else running off it this would mean that it could theoretically provide 33 Amp Hours in about 3.3 hours so I would think that the claim of a recharge time of 3 to 4 hours would be OK provided your system is capable of 10 Amps and you are not running anything else on the same circuit.
Others may like to comment on real world experience with losses in wiring and whether it would be a good idea to draw max current for that amount of time! I know that I run a heavier cable from my second battery to a dedicated plug with a Hella connector on it for running my own fridge and recharging a 24AH battery pack.
Cheers
Muddy

Hello Steve & Mish,
We have 2 x PS800P Pwr Packs & they do charge up in 4-6 hrs. We have heavy duty cabling from the 2nd battery fitted to aviod voltage drop. Both units work
well one runs the camper 12v circuit/
water pump & the other for external lighting. I sometimes run the 60lt waeco overnight too. I had a super cheap special prior to the Projecta & would not waste hard earned on one again. Repco have the PS800P on special from time to time @ $99.
Hope this helps.

Steve the jumper pack is a Projecta ,,Two to three years old now but still starts the 3.4 V6 Prado .. The 700amp battery is a (Yuasa Overlander 700 4WD ) I know a lot of people go the two battery set up but there was no room in the Prado. The big battery works fine for me most of my stops are overnight and the car gets driven the next day to recharge the battery. My son also has a red supercheap 600 amp jump pack $49 I think , this also starts my car but I dont know how long it will last.
