Try and get an earlier model engine, the later have fly by wire throttles and are a night mare to wire up(so Ive been told).Id try and get a gearbox as
well, less hastles and I think they are a better box for the power increase.
When I looked at it I decided it was to much hastle, turboed my 4 runner, was dissapointed and sold it,bought a cruiser.

Hi there shad D,if you get the 3 litre 5L will need to change the sump and exhaust manifold if your lux is solid axle. The motor you are talking about with the factory turbo is called a 1KZ which requires. (1) wiring done by a auto spark (2) engine mounts need to be cut off and moved back and rewelded. (3) relocation of alot of extra's under bonnet. (4) air con pipes (5) power steer. Has been done and have seen it, my mate has one night mare of a job but now its completed looks and go's great. You are better of with the 5L NOT THE 5LE motor and just whack a turbo on that, the 5LE is also the electronic pump which will require some wiring senses etc. If you are doing this just cause the old 2.8 has gone bang there is one on ebay
Toyota hilux 2.8 diesel, 3L complete engine minus power steering pump. Done 306000km, has an oil leak but otherwise runs
well.
Came out of a 1991 4WD, LN106 ute which i bought for parts and now im selling whats left.
Gearbox is 5 speed, complete unit including transfer case and cross member with mount.
Would like to sell together but will seperate for the right price.
Priced to sell, Pick up is from Greenacre.
Call me on 0409 469 723 or email for further queries, goodluck
On ebay Item number: 120012596542 might be some use to you save you time and $$$ if hes willing to separate Regards Steve M
