Noticed a large amount of oil under my tail drive shaft in my fj62 this morning..
Just over night all the oil had leaked out and apparently i need a new diff and everything?!?
How can this happen?
Justin

Sounds to me you bought a car with more problems than it's worth. Don't worry your not the only one!!!
The schmic looking and driving FJ62 I bought ended up being the biggest money pit I've ever seen.

My 60 series has had several pinion seals over the years, the seal wears a rim into the metal of the yolk, and if necessary you can put 2 seals on to get at new metal. Your carrier bearings may be stuffed also, but the diffs are not big money to rebuild using second hand parts as I did from a Diff place that had heaps of spares.
Mine was rebuilt years ago & there is not a noise or backlash in it. Unbreakable truck !

Thanks guys,
Also, i had a thought today (for once) were there other FJ62's out there that came with LSD?
Would it be worth asking the mechanic to see if he could find an LSD rear diff or were they too rare?

Cipher,
2nd hand (not reco) LSD $700 from wreckers. If you do up your diff I recommend replacing the flange (non genuine) and only using a genuine pinion seal. Buy it yourself if you have to and give it to the diff bloke. I've had 36 cruisers since 1988 that I've owned to do 4wd tours and for private use and doing the diffs this way meant no future probs. Non genuine seals tend to leak after about 15-20,000km.
The last flange I bought was for a 62 sahara and was $60, seal $9 genuine. Full LSD rebuild new bearings preload etc $400 cash.
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Tour Boy

it cant happen overnight the pinion seal is too high for all the oil to leak out

Well it wasnt actually over night it was actually in the space of 3 hours...
I went to kennards picked up a trailer, came home, parked the car, loaded up the trailer (took about 3 hours) and there was about 6L of oil from my diff sitting there on the ground..

There is no way that 6ltrs could leak out of the pinion seal, cant quite remember but i dont think the diff even holds that much, Why does the whole diff need rebuilding or replacing? maybe its just the seal? is it noisy? is the pinion moving around? as sometimes the pinion nut can become loose causing damage to the seal but not necessarily to anything else, if this in the case fit a new seal, flange maybe, and make sure the pinion/flange nut is locktited on.

thanks warrioroz, i meant 2L not 6, sorry my mistake..
Umm yeah the drive shaft was moving about had about 15mm movement.. Was clunking and crashing and banging,
She's gone.. :-(
Its getting fixed now tho...
Whats the story with LSD in rear? Would that give diff build up?

Diff build up? i suppose you mean wind-up. No LSD will not cause this, it is caused by driving on hard sufaces in 4 wheel drive (except constant 4x4 which runs a centre diff), and as the front and rear
wheels dont travel at exactly the same speed the diffs and drive shafts will load-up which can lead to failure of the diff or driveshafts.
