Advice Anybody? Travelling north from alice to
halls creek along the Tanami. We are towing a off- road "Light weight" Camper weighing about 650 Kilo's behind a Toyota Landcruiser HJ 60 series 4 Litre dielsel, the Fuel
tank carries 90 Litres. Would we need to carry extra fuel or will we just be able to top up at each fuel stop.Tilmouth Roadhouse,
Yuendumu and Rabbit Flat (we are aware of limited Opening Days)

Have a bopeep at the trip planning section above,,,the blue bit,,,,,find Fuel Consumption, then scroll for a few reports on the trip, would give you a pretty good place to start i reckon.

Hi Geoff and Jude,
just top up as you go and spread you money around, including Rabbit Flat, and that way all these folks will be there in the future. It is neat to have long range tanks and jerries but think and support the local guy, including Bruce at Rabbit Flat.
Regards

Ian ,
I think I would rather see Bruce go and have a person there who was a little more interested in doing business and less interested in turning people away.

Geoff & Jude,
We crossed in early June in a diesel 3 L Patrol. We had 165 L on board which would have been sufficient if RF had not been able to supply diesel. To maintain a healthy safety factor we topped up at Gem Tree and then RF. As said above, if RF is not supported it may not be there much longer. Just don't look at the price.
For what its worth,
Jon W

Well I tend to agree, one rule would be dont drive past an outback fuel stop, Ian makes a great point, they mightnt be there next time when you need them and theyre great people.
Take enough but always top up I reckon

Alays like to stop and support local people. Even if I don't top up, still stop for 20 to 30 litres to get me through. Have a chat too, may learn of something local worth visiting, and check on road conditions.

Agree to all above...but also ask if fuel is available at next point of call....sometimes they may not have any !!..worth asking ..support the locals and don't think of the extra couple of bucks that you think you may save...its
well spent....they look after you when you get in the bleep ..

Well exception to all the above should be on the Nullabor.
Seems most of the roadhouses are run (though apparently not owned) by the Border Village folks and their prices on fuel are obnoxious.
My experience over the last few weeks for diesel:
Ceduna: 1.38 (truly independent)
other truly independent sites were up to 1.58
the Border Village sites (Madura, Border Village,
Caiguna, etc.) were up at 1.78-1.84
Norseman was back to 1.52
Absolute daylight robbery - it is impossible to imagine that this is justifiable.
Strongly recommend not supporting them until they get real.
Ciao for now
Andrew.

Hmmm - would be nice.
I need to sanitise a few that will not incur the wrath of the natives (aka ExporOz Inc) for their excessive advertising - my rig ends up looking like a mobile billboard (like theirs).
I'll let you know when I change it ...
Ciao for now
Andrew.

I do not think any of these people make a fortune out of running the the outback roadhouses. They do bump the price up a bit as I understand they only pay about 1c extra per litre per 100 ks from the supply depot for their fuel. Still, would you live out there. We just did a trip up the centre and I do have to say the only place I really felt as though I was being taken was Kings Canyon. $1.90 for diesel. What I cannot understand is I pay $1.31 in
Darwin and $1.44 in
Canberra. Why the difference? We are retired and have CPI indexed pensions and I wonder if fuel is in the CPI basket? Probably not.
